What’s In The Box? May 10-16

Glorious May
The May sunshine is out, and the crops are ripening apace—get set for some new spring arrivals in your box! This week’s lineup truly does celebrate spring in all its glory with a wonderful assortment of Asian ingredients like pac choi, baby Shiitake mushrooms and mitsuba, plus Northwest favorites like rhubarb, purple Viola radishes and garlic scallions. Also included: Fresh pumpernickel bread, handcrafted chicken stock and our summer strawberry preserves.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Baby Shiitake Mushrooms

With their curled umbrella-shaped caps and tender thin stalks, baby Shiitake mushrooms release a garlic-pine aroma when cooked and boast a rich, earthy flavor—we heartily recommend adding them to a stir-fry along with this week’s plethora of spring vegetables!

Farm & Larder Chicken Stock

Made from roasted Bella Luna chickens, this flavorful stock is simmered slowly for hours with carrots, onions and celery and seasoned with a dash of sea salt.

Pumpernickel Bread

Baked fresh just for us by a small bakery in nearby Snohomish, this slightly-sweet rye bread loaf is wonderful served toasted with freshly-sliced radishes and a drizzle of olive oil and sea salt on top.

Los Vascos Rosé 2017

This pretty rosé is made from estate-grown grapes from the Colchagua province of Chile and immediately pressed after harvesting to maintain the wine’s innate freshness. The nose explodes with aromas of strawberry, while the palate has plenty of volume, pleasant concentration, and a superbly creamy texture.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Busy scratching through the straw mulch in their spacious outdoor run looking for tasty bugs and worms on nice days, our heritage breed laying hens are also thoroughly enjoying a bounty of sprouting seeds and spring popweed, in turn supplying us with fresh eggs in beautiful shades of blues, green and brown.

Strawberry Preserves

Our housemade freezer-style jam is crafted from ripe, juicy strawberries hand-picked each morning during peak season. To preserve the wonderful fresh flavor and color, we make this jam with berries, organic cane sugar, fresh-squeezed lemon juice and pectin. (That’s it!)

Fresh Fruit

Ruby-red rhubarb and zesty lemons.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Mini mixed baby lettuces and spinach, plus mitsuba, a wild Japanese green that boasts a clean flavor reminiscent of chervil-meets-celery leaf, and red Russian kale

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes purple Viola radishes, Hakurei turnips, garlic scallions, leeks, cauliflower, baby red potatoes and baby carrots. Also included this week: Beautiful pac choi, a type of Chinese cabbage that is excellent sautéed along with other spring vegetables in a stir fry.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Enjoy a bountiful selection of fragrant herbs this week: Mint, rosemary, Italian parsley, oregano, thyme and shallots.
