What’s In The Box? September 14-20

Summer into Fall
Though September has brought with it cooler temperature, falling leaves and other signs that fall is indeed just around the corner, here at Bella Luna and the other nearby farms we are continuing to enjoy a bounty of late-summer crops—from bicolor corn and eggplants to juicy melons. Thus, this week’s box combines the best of both seasons as it stars a robust tomato and roasted pepper soup as well as Gruyère cheese bread, farm-fresh eggs and produce like sprouting broccoli and colorful grilling peppers.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Housemade Tomato & Roasted Pepper Soup

This soul-soothing soup is crafted in our farmhouse kitchen from our signature chicken stock, sweet onions and herbs and stars the perfect combination of ripe summer tomatoes and beautifully-roasted peppers. Serve up a steaming bowlful alongside a hunk of Gruyère cheese bread and a crisp salad for a simply satisfying meal.

Le Conserve della Nonna Corona Beans

Imported from Italy, these beautiful jarred beans add hearty appeal to soups and salads.

Gruyère Cheese Bread

Made in nearby Snohomish by our favorite bakery, this freshly-baked loaf balances sweet, nutty Gruyère cheese with a light, crisp crust. Absolutely delicious toasted or re-warmed in the oven—just sprinkle with a few drops of water and bake at 350° for about 15 minutes.

Villa Travignoli Chianti Rùfina

This beautiful red wine is crafted purely from Sangiovese grapes, a dark-berried vine that is almost synonymous with the deep, dark wines of Tuscany. Delicious and dry with notes of red cherry, violet and cinnamon, this wine pairs nicely with a variety of foods including this week’s soup and salad fare.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. With shorter days that signal the coming of fall, the girls are up with the sun to roam the outdoors where they still enjoy the warm afternoons. Bedtime is coming much earlier now, as we see them heading into their house to roost as the sun is going down.

Blueberry Jam

Our housemade jam is crafted from juicy, ripe blueberries plucked at the height of the season. To preserve the wonderful fresh flavor and color, we make this jam with blueberries, organic cane sugar and pectin.

Ripe Fruit

Juicy Canary melon.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes sprouting broccoli, Japanese eggplant, bicolor corn, Sungold cherry tomatoes, sweet onions and English cucumber, plus orange Italian, red Carmen and sweet Bull’s Horn grilling peppers.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Peppery arugula greens and escarole.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Fresh Italian parsley, basil, mint and thyme.
