What’s In The Box? August 24-30

Sun Ripened
No matter how you pronounce it, the word ‘tomato’ practically sings of summer, as well it should as the seasonal beauties are now at their best here in August. This week’s box pays homage to the ripe, juicy summer favorite with a selection of heirloom tomatoes, plus fresh bucatini pasta, sun-dried tomato-kissed Pomodoro bread, farm-fresh eggs, and smoky scamorza cheese all to help you enjoy their vine-ripened glory. A wealth of summer produce ranging from fennel and peppers to summer squash and cucumbers, plus ripe Tuscan melon and fresh-picked blueberries from Bow, Washington, finishes off this bright and beautiful lineup.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Fresh Bucatini Pasta

Hand-crafted in nearby Bellingham, this spaghetti-like semolina pasta has a hole running through the center—hence the name bucatini, which comes from the Italian buco, meaning “hole”, while bucato means “pierced”. This week, top this lovely pasta with fresh heirloom tomatoes and basil for a quick, summery entrée.

Heirloom Tomatoes

Our locally-grown heirloom and cherry tomatoes continue to ripen apace, and they are ready to be enjoyed in your burgers, sandwiches, salads, and of course, this week’s suggested pasta. This week’s impressive selection includes: Cuor di Bue Albenga, Juliet, Rapunzel, black cherry, Barry’s Crazy cherry, Sungold and Sweet Mojo varieties.

Pomodoro Loaf

Flecked with flavorful sun-dried tomatoes and herbs, plus a hint of sea salt, this savory loaf is baked just for us by our favorite bakery in Snohomish.

Kind Stranger 2022 Rosé

This dry, direct-to-press rosé from Washington’s Wahluke Slope is fruit-forward with a crisp, bright finish. A Provencal style rosé composed of Grenache, Mourvedre, and Cinsault grapes, it is made by Ohio native Andrew Latta, with proceeds benefiting Mary’s Place in Seattle.

Farm Fresh Eggs

As they spend lots of time outdoors in their run, our small flock of heritage breed laying hens are enjoying succulent popweed pulled from the gardens along with an extra helping of grain to supplement their diet to give us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.

Ferndale Farmstead Smoky Scamorza

Crafted by the cheesemakers at this family-owned and -operated farm in Ferndale, this Smoky Scamorza is a three-time award winning signature Italian cheese aged on ropes, a technique used by artisans for hundreds of years that gives it a characteristic pear-shaped body. A relative of a mozzarella, but with a bolder and more buttery flavor, this cheese is smoked in-house using a signature blend of Apple and Alder wood smoke.

Summer Fruit

Ripe summer melon and freshly-picked blueberries from Bow Hill Blueberries.

Fresh Organic Greens

Chicory frisée, cantaloupe shoots, green shiso and Little Gem lettuces.

Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables

This week’s beautiful bounty of summer produce also includes sprouting broccoli, fennel, Walla Walla sweet onion, Costata Romanesco summer squash, Russian Banana fingerling potatoes, Jimmy Nardello peppers, Czech black peppers and Persian cucumbers.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Fresh Italian parsley, chives and basil from the walled garden at Bella Luna.
