What’s In The Box? December 12-18
Colors of the Season
Just as the holiday lights are brightening up the cold, dark nights, so too is this beautiful array of colorful new produce! In this week’s delivery, you’ll discover such garden-grown highlights as Chantenay carrots, mini Delicata squash and Hakurei turnips, as well as punchy Spanish black radishes, organic polish sausages, multigrain bread, a bottle of well-balanced Spanish red wine, fragrant herbs, farm-fresh eggs, and a variety of color-rich organic greens. Enjoy!
Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:
Skagit River Ranch Polish Sausage
The pampered pigs raised on the Skagit River Ranch in Sedro-Woolley roam outdoors in certified-organic pastureland to root, dig, and cavort as only happy pigs can, thriving on a diet of flax seed, corn and wheat. Spiced with savory herbs, these delectable sausages are a hearty accompaniment to any fall meal.
Spanish Black Radishes
With a jet-black exterior and creamy white flesh, this spicy, crunchy radish variety is high in vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium.
Multigrain Bread
Crafted in nearby Snohomish by our favorite bakery, this healthy freshly-baked loaf is made with locally-milled Shepherd’s Grain flour and seven different whole grains, plus a hint of honey and toasted sunflower seeds.
Honoro Vera Monastrell 2022
This organic Monastrell (Mourvèdre) wine from Spain features a beautiful cherry-red color that is complemented by attractive floral notes and hints of ripe fruit and balsamic on the nose. Well-balanced and fresh on the palate, it is vivid and tasty, with a nice acidity and noble tannins.
Farm Fresh Eggs
Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs each day in beautiful shades of brown, cream and green. With the much shorter days of fall, the girls are up with the sun to start the day, anxious to head outside where they still enjoy roaming if it isn’t raining too much! Bedtime is coming much earlier now, as we see them heading into their house to roost as the sun is going down.
Britt’s Riesling Sauerkraut
Crafted from green cabbage, sweet onion, sea salt and yes, Riesling wine, this zippy sauerkraut from Langley, Washington’s Britt’s Fermented Foods is wonderful served with this week’s fare. (Fun fact: The first sauerkraut was actually from China and used rice wine! Sauerkraut was introduced to Europe by the Huns when they came on horseback and became a staple in German cuisine when they combined salt and water with their cabbage.)
Organic Greens
This week, enjoy red-veined sorrel, pea shoots, sunflower shoots, spinach, mustard green mix and Chioggia radicchio.
Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables
This week’s produce selection also includes: Chantenay carrots, Hakurei turnips and mini Delicata squash, plus Yuzu lemons and Bella Luna orchard apples.
Garden-Grown Herbs
Italian parsley from the garden at Bella Luna.
