What’s In The Box? June 29 – July 5

Italian Summer
The Italian summer calls to mind visions of beautiful wine, homemade pasta, and garden-fresh produce simply and beautifully prepared. Hence, this week’s box captures the flavors of summer by way of Italy with handmade semolina bucatini noodles to toss with Skagit River Ranch Italian sausage, plus fresh, creamy fior di latte mozzarella-style cheese from Ferndale Farmstead Creamy. Also included for this relaxed, refreshing meal: Pain au Levain bread, red wine, and a colorful assortment of summer produce that includes Little Gem lettuces, golden beets, English shelling peas, rainbow parsley, salad burnet, chives, cauliflower, sweet cherries, and much, much more.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Fresh Bellingham Pasta Co. Bucatini

Hand-crafted in nearby Bellingham, this spaghetti-like semolina pasta has a hole running through the center—hence the name bucatini, which comes from the Italian buco, meaning “hole”, while bucato means “pierced”.

Skagit River Ranch Italian Sausage

The pampered pigs raised on the Skagit River Ranch in Sedro-Woolley roam outdoors in certified-organic pasture land to root, dig, and cavort as only happy pigs can, thriving on a diet of flax seed, corn and wheat. Spiced with savory herbs, this delectable Italian-style sausage will add a flavorful, savory note to your pasta this week.

Pain au Levain Bread

This slightly-nutty, slightly-sweet sourdough bread epitomizes French country-style baking with a chewy crust and light, airy interior. Baked by our favorite bakery in Snohomish, this traditional Pain au Levain is crafted using the bakery’s own sourdough starter.

Chianti Riello Delle Balze 2018

This beautiful red wine from Tuscany features the bold flavors of a classic Chianti. Highlighted by dark red fruit notes like cherry and raspberry, it is an easy drinking sipper with notes of oak, vanilla and a hint of pepper.

Ferndale Farmstead Fior di Latte Cheese

Fior di Latte, or “blossom of milk” translated into English, is a fresh, whole milk mozzarella with a delicate flavor and texture. Crafted by the cheesemakers at this family-owned and -operated farm in Ferndale, this particular version is made the old fashioned way using Italian cultures instead of vinegar to give it the full mozzarella flavor that this well-known cheese deserves.

Farm Fresh Eggs

As they spend much more time outdoors in their run, our small flock of heritage breed laying hens are enjoying succulent popweed pulled from the gardens along with an extra helping of grain to supplement their diet to give us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.

Fresh Organic Greens

Enjoy a bevy of beautiful greens this week: Little Gem lettuces, mini red Romaine, borage, frisée, escarole and Mexican quelite.

Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes golden beets, English shelling peas, red spring onions and Fioretto cauliflower, plus sweet dark red cherries.

Fresh Garden Herbs & Edible Flowers

Chives, salad burnet, Italian red garlic, oregano and Italian parsley, from the hoophouse and walled garden at Bella Luna, plus edible nasturtium blooms.
