What’s In The Box? June 8-14

Sunday Supper
In the tradition of our own Nonna Pat’s long-standing Sunday suppers, this week’s box includes all the fixings for a vibrant Italian-inspired meal to share with your nearest and dearest—from fresh semolina pasta shells and Skagit River Ranch Italian sausage to garden-grown salad greens and pillowy-soft focaccia bread. Side dish-worthy produce such as fresh fava beans, jumbo asparagus and Cremini mushrooms, plus eggs from our heritage-breed laying hens, edible nasturtium flowers and living Genovese basil, all help to round out this robust meal.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Bellingham Pasta Co. Fresh Shells

These shells are made from semolina and hand-crafted in nearby Bellingham; also called conchiglie, they are exceedingly versatile in pasta recipes as each noodle serves as a vessel for any type of sauce you throw at it.

Skagit River Ranch Italian Sausage

The pampered pigs raised on the Skagit River Ranch in Sedro-Woolley roam outdoors in certified-organic pasture land to root, dig, and cavort as only happy pigs can, thriving on a diet of flax seed, corn and wheat. Spiced with savory herbs, this delectable Italian-style sausage will add a flavorful, savory note to a hearty bowl of pasta this week.

Focaccia Bread

This soft, chewy Italian-style loaf is baked just for us by our favorite local bakery. Kissed with fragrant fresh herbs, it is delicious served warm and dipped in olive oil.

Ca’ del Sarto Ardente Toscana 2019

Ca’ del Sarto wines are all handcrafted in small batches, carefully chosen from four of the best regions in Italy: Toscana, Piemonte, Sicilia and Toscana. This beautiful red wine hailing from that last region possesses a sharp, intensely fruity aroma with pleasant hints of red pepper and liquorice.

Ferndale Farmstead Caciotta Cheese

Crafted by the cheesemakers at this family-owned and -operated farm in Ferndale, this traditional Italian table cheese boasts a mild yet irresistible flavor with a soft texture. Aged in small wheels for a short time to produce a natural yellow rind, this cheese is tasty and versatile.

Farm Fresh Eggs

As they spend much more time outdoors in their run, our small flock of heritage breed laying hens are enjoying succulent popweed pulled from the gardens along with an extra helping of grain to supplement their diet to give us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.

Ritrovo Selections Altino Latino Smoked Sweet Pepper & Hot Italian Pepper Seasonings

Kick this up a notch this week with these two pantry provisions imported from Italy: A Fior di Maiella Altino smoked sweet pepper seasoning blend accented by cumin, turmeric, orange peel, juniper, and oregano, and Fior di Maiella Italian hot pepper flakes, perfect for adding a little heat and spice to recipes.

Fresh Organic Greens

Red Mizuna greens, fancy salad mix and Pomegranate Crunch lettuce.

Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes jumbo asparagus, red spring onions, sweet yellow onions, Cremini mushrooms and fresh fava beans, plus blood oranges and lemons.

Fresh Garden Herbs & Edible Blooms

Greek oregano, garlic, mint, and thyme, from the hoophouse and walled garden at Bella Luna.

Living Basil

Genovese basil plants for you to enjoy for weeks to come!

Amaretti Cookies with Chocolate

Dotted with chocolate bits, these traditional soft, buttery Italian cookies are a wonderful little pick-me-up.
