What’s In The Box? March 27 – April 2
The Italian Spring
Rich with comforting flavors, yet bright with spring ingredients, this week’s Italian-themed box is fit for a family-style feast. Have fun experimenting in the kitchen with the provisions for pasta night—locally-crafted bucatini, organic Italian sausage, Pain au Levain bread and Nonna Pat’s classic marinara sauce—plus, gorgeous garden favorites like purple sprouting broccoli, green garlic, mixed citrus, spring lettuces, Belgian endive and living basil. Inside you’ll also find: Locally-foraged dried Porcini mushrooms, sunny daffodils, and farm-fresh eggs. Enjoy!
Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:
Lagana Foods Bucatini
Hand-crafted in Seattle using sustainably grown Shepherd’s Grain flour flour and water, this spaghetti-like extruded pasta has a hole running through the center—hence the name bucatini, which comes from the Italian buco, meaning “hole”, while bucato means “pierced”.
Skagit River Ranch Italian Sausage
The pampered pigs raised on the Skagit River Ranch in Sedro-Woolley roam outdoors in certified-organic pasture land to root, dig, and cavort as only happy pigs can, thriving on a diet of flax seed, corn and wheat. Spiced with savory herbs, this delectable Italian-style sausage will add a flavorful, savory note to a hearty bowl of pasta this week.
Nonna Pat’s Marinara Sauce
It’s Nonna Pat’s classic Sunday gravy! Crafted in our farm kitchen with organically-grown local tomatoes (and lots of love), the key to our beloved family recipe is its simplicity: juicy, ripe local tomatoes, a handful of hand-torn basil leaves, fresh garlic, a swirl of first-press Italian olive oil, then just a dash of sea salt and fresh ground pepper.
Pain au Levain Bread & Blueberry Muffins
This slightly-nutty, slightly-sweet sourdough loaf embodies country-style French baking with a chewy crust and light, airy interior. Baked just for us at a small bakery in Snohomish, this traditional Pain au Levain is crafted using the bakery’s own sourdough starter. Also included: Freshly-baked blueberry muffins.
Honoro Vera Monastrell 2022
This organic Monastrell (Mourvèdre) wine from Spain features a beautiful cherry-red color that is complemented by attractive floral notes and hints of ripe fruit and balsamic on the nose. Well-balanced and fresh on the palate, it is vivid and tasty, with a nice acidity and noble tannins.
Farm Fresh Eggs
As they balance their time between foraging in their outdoor run during rain breaks and then snuggling up in their coop in the evenings, our small flock of heritage breed laying hens is made up of three breeds: Black Copper Maran, Ameraucana, and Delaware. They especially enjoy produce trimmings and fresh greens to supplement their diet of organic layer mash, and continue to give us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream that we collect throughout the day.
Dried Porcini Mushrooms
Italian for ‘little pigs’, these dried locally-foraged Porcini mushrooms from local company Found and Foraged are meaty and rich in taste, imparting a distinctive, woodsy flavor to any number of dishes.
Organic Greens
This week’s selection of gorgeous spring greens: Belgian endive, red Chioggia radicchio, and spring lettuces.
Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables
This week’s produce selection also includes purple sprouting broccoli, yellow onions and mixed citrus fruit, including Golden Nugget mandarins, Seville oranges and blood oranges.
Garden-Grown Herbs
Genovese living basil, plus green garlic from the walled garden.
Fresh-Cut Daffodils
Sunny spring daffodils to brighten your table!
