What’s In The Box? May 18-24

MAY 18-24

Glorious May
The recent abundant sunshine and warm temps have the gardens looking oh-so-bright and beautiful:so get set to enjoy some springtime splendor in this week’s box! This lineup celebrates spring in all its glory with an assortment of garden-grown ingredients—jumbo asparagus, shallots, endive, crisp salad greens, Genovese basil and French tarragon—plus foraged finds like Morel mushrooms. Also included: Fresh Gruyère cheese bread, eggs from the farm’s heritage-breed hens, Meyer lemons and raspberries, and both Arborio rice and our signature chicken stock to help craft a springtime version of your favorite risotto.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Locally Foraged Morel Mushrooms

These seasonal mushrooms are only available in the wild, developing a cult following of local ‘mushroom hunters’ who roam our forests looking for this treat of nature. Woodsy and earthy, yet delicate and rich, they are excellent in this week’s risotto, or simply sauté in butter or olive oil and enjoy on their own!

Arborio Rice

This round-grain rice comes from the Po River Valley region of Italy and is named for the town of Arborio located in the heart of the area. When cooked with our flavorful chicken stock and a splash of white wine, it becomes creamy and starchy and is a great accompaniment to just about any flavor combination, like this week’s Morel mushrooms.

Gruyère Cheese Bread

Made in nearby Snohomish by our favorite bakery, this freshly-baked loaf balances rich Gruyère cheese with a light, crisp crust.

Yalumba Y Series Unwooded Chardonnay 2021

This pale straw-colored Chardonnay from South Australia features aromas of fresh tropical fruits and spring blossom. The palate is long and creamy, with flavors reminiscent of grapefruit and barbecued green mango, as well as spicy lemon myrtle and a savory edge with flinty notes thanks to the wine’s wild fermentation. A refreshing, lip-smacking acidity gives this wine lovely length with a savory, textural finish.

Farm Fresh Eggs

As they spend more time outdoors in their run, our small flock of heritage breed laying hens are enjoying succulent popweed pulled from the gardens along with an extra helping of grain to supplement their diet, continuing to give us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.

Farm & Larder Chicken Stock

Made from roasted Bella Luna chickens, this flavorful stock is simmered slowly for hours with carrots, onions and celery and seasoned with a dash of sea salt.

La Boîte Herbes de Carmel

This distinctive blend of thyme, rosemary, nigella and other spices provides beautiful seasonings to salad dressings, poultry, and roasted vegetables.

Seasonal Fruit

Meyer lemons and raspberries.

Fresh Organic Greens

Spring salad mix, endive and frisée.

Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes jumbo asparagus and shallots.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Enjoy a bevy of fragrant herbs from the hoophouse and walled garden at Bella Luna this week—French tarragon, Genovese basil, spearmint, flat leaf parsley and garlic.

Amaretti Cookies with Chocolate

Dotted with chocolate bits, these traditional soft, buttery Italian cookies are a wonderful little pick-me-up.
