What’s In The Box? September 28-October 4
Cozying up to Fall
Much like the autumn leaves that are beginning to burst into brilliant shades of orange, yellow and scarlet, our gardens are gracing us with a bounty of vibrant produce, from colorful peppers and juicy tomatoes to fragrant fennel and crisp garden greens. Celebrate the best of the season this week with a warm-and-wonderful risotto made with our flavorful chicken stock, Grana-style cheese and locally-foraged white Chanterelle mushrooms, plus multigrain bread, farm-fresh eggs and a robust red wine—pour a glass, ladle some piping-hot risotto into a bowl, and cozy up in your favorite easy chair.
Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:
White Chanterelle Mushrooms
With a firm texture and light, delicate flavor, these locally-foraged white Chanterelle mushrooms will lend earthy appeal to a variety of dishes.
Arborio Rice
This round-grain rice comes from the Po River Valley region of Italy and is named for the town of Arborio located in the heart of the area. When cooked with our flavorful chicken stock and a splash of white wine, it becomes creamy and starchy and is a great accompaniment to just about any flavor combination, like this week’s white Chanterelle mushrooms.
Sliced Multigrain Bread
Crafted in nearby Snohomish by our favorite bakery, this healthy freshly-baked loaf is made with locally-milled Shepherd’s Grain flour and seven different whole grains, plus a hint of honey and toasted sunflower seeds.
J. Mourat Collection Vin de France 2022
Comprising vineyards spanning 120 hectares, Vignobles Mourat represents one of the largest viticultural plots dedicated to organic agriculture in the Loire Valley. This eclectic red wine blend composed of Cabernet Franc, Négrette, Gamay, and Pinot Noir grapes is generous and mouth watering, with aromas of cherry, black currant and a touch of graphite.
Farm Fresh Eggs
As they spend lots of time outdoors in their run, our small flock of heritage breed laying hens are enjoying succulent popweed pulled from the gardens along with an extra helping of grain to supplement their diet to give us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.
Grana-Style Cheese
This hard Grana-style cheese is crafted from part-skim cow’s milk to allow for longer aging of 24 months or more, and is turned and rubbed with olive oil during aging to create a smooth, golden rind.
Farm & Larder Chicken Stock
Made from roasted Bella Luna chickens, this flavorful stock is simmered slowly for hours with carrots, onions and celery and seasoned with a dash of sea salt.
Kiwi Berries
A cousin of the well-known kiwi, these smooth, grape-sized Anna Hardy kiwi berries boast a delightfully sweet flavor. One note: These little beauties will arrive a touch underripe, so allow them to sit out at room temperature for a few days to ripen. Their skin will turn darker green, become slightly wrinkled, and they will yield to gentle pressure when ready to eat; be patient, it’s worth the wait!
Fresh Organic Greens
A beautiful bounty of fall greens awaits this week: Fancy salad mix, Bietola Swiss chard, Mizuna greens, pea tendrils and Little Gem lettuce.
Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables
This week’s beautiful bounty of produce also includes Escamillo peppers, Jimmy Nardello peppers, fennel, onions, heirloom tomatoes and Sungold cherry tomatoes.
Fresh Garden Herbs
Italian parsley and Oaxacan oregano from the walled garden at Bella Luna.
