Season of Plenty

This week’s lineup celebrates the hearty, comforting flavors of autumn—with a Bavarian twist. Savor Skagit River Ranch’s all-natural bratwurst, crafted from pasture-raised pork and perfectly seasoned, paired with Britt’s Riesling sauerkraut for a tangy, wine-kissed complement. Enjoy slices of freshly baked pumpernickel bread alongside a medley of fall produce from our fields: crisp apples and pears, buttery Black Futsu squash, and vivid green romanesco cauliflower. A mix of radicchio varieties and tender garden herbs add brightness and color, while fresh eggs from our heritage hens remind us to savor the simple pleasures of this most abundant season.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Skagit River Ranch Bratwurst
The pampered pigs raised on this farm in Sedro-Woolley roam outdoors in certified organic pastureland to root, dig, and cavort, thriving on a diet of flaxseed, corn and wheat. This week, enjoy the all-natural pork in the ranch’s perfectly-spiced bratwurst.

Britt’s Riesling Sauerkraut
Crafted from green cabbage, sweet onion, sea salt and yes, Riesling wine, this zippy sauerkraut from Langley, Washington’s Britt’s Fermented Foods is wonderful served with this week’s Bavarian fare. (Fun fact: The first sauerkraut was actually from China and used rice wine! Sauerkraut was introduced to Europe by the Huns when they came on horseback and became a staple in German cuisine when they combined salt and water with their cabbage.)

Pumpernickel Bread
Baked fresh just for us by a small bakery in nearby Snohomish, this slightly-sweet rye bread loaf is wonderful served alongside this week’s German-inspired fare.

Saviah Cellars ‘The Jack’ Chardonnay
This delicious wine from the Columbia Valley opens with scents of pear, apples, and tropical fruit with hints of lemon and vanilla. The palate is fresh, clean and crisp with beautiful balance expressed through flavors of stone fruit and Gala apples.

Farm Fresh Eggs
Our small flock of heritage-breed Black Copper Marans, Ameraucanas, and Delawares provides us with fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. As fall days shorten, the hens rise with the sun to roam outdoors—and tuck into their coop early each evening to roost.

Seasonal Organic Greens
This week’s selection of greens includes a bounty of radicchio, including Castelfranco, Treviso, Verona “Yellowstone”, and other mixed varieties.

Fresh Organic Fruit & Vegetables
This week’s produce selection contains leeks, green cabbage, sweet Italian peppers, green romanesco cauliflower, and both apples and pears from the Bella Luna orchard. Also included: Black Futsu squash, a rare Japanese specialty squash with a unique warty black exterior and nutty, buttery flesh that is beautifully enhanced when roasted.

Garden-Grown Herbs
A fragrant mixed bundle of herbs from the walled garden here at Bella Luna.
