What’s In The Box? August 24-30

Summer Favorites
Tomatoes! Corn! Peaches! These treasured late-summer favorites have arrived and this week’s box celebrates the trio in all their sun-ripened glory, as well as other new arrivals such as eggplant, Romanesco zucchini and sweet peppers. Also joining these summer all-stars: Everything you need for a lovely pan-roasted corn and baby Shiitake mushroom risotto crafted with our own housemade chicken stock, plus Pain au Levain bread, Spanish red wine and our signature topping mix to whip up a warm peach cobbler for dessert. Enjoy!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Arborio Rice

This round-grain rice comes from the Po River Valley region of Italy and is named for the town of Arborio located in the heart of the region. When cooked with chicken stock and a splash of wine, it becomes creamy and starchy and is a great accompaniment to just about any flavor combination—try it this week tossed with pan-roasted corn, baby Shiitake mushrooms and French red shallots.

Baby Shiitake Mushrooms

With their curled umbrella-shaped caps and tender thin stalks, baby Shiitakes release a garlic-pine aroma when cooked and boast a rich, earthy flavor.

Housemade Chicken Stock

Made from roasted Bella Luna chickens, our housemade stock is simmered with carrots, onions, parsley and celery and seasoned with just a dash of sea salt.

Pain au Levain Bread

This slightly-nutty, slightly-sweet sourdough loaf epitomizes French country-style baking with a chewy crust and light, airy interior. Baked by our favorite bakery in Snohomish, this traditional Pain au Levain is crafted using the bakery’s own sourdough starter; serve it alongside this week’s risotto to complete the meal.

Bodegas Ontañon Crianza 2013

Bodegas Ontañon is a family-owned winery located in Spain’s Rioja region—the country’s most well known. A beautiful blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha grapes, this particular red blend displays notes of black fruit and spice with natural and delicate acidity.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. With shorter days that signal the coming of fall, the girls are up with the sun to roam the outdoors where they still enjoy the warm afternoons.

Blueberry Jam

Made here at Bella Luna in our farmhouse kitchen from our fresh-picked blueberries, organic cane sugar and pectin.

F&L Cobbler Crust Mix

Our signature cobbler crust mix contains organic flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and butter; when combined with cream, the resulting mixture can be used for a light and fluffy cobbler topping or cut into rounds for shortcakes. Pair with either your favorite stone fruit or berries for the perfect summer dessert.

Ripe Summer Fruit

Cantaloupes, plus peaches from Cloud Mountain Farm located in Everson, Washington.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes bicolor sweet corn, sweet onions, eggplant, Romanesco zucchini, Armenian cucumbers, mixed heirloom tomatoes, Joy’s Midnight Swiss chard, Riesentraube cherry tomatoes and sweet peppers.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Summer salad mix, purslane and Truchas mini Romaine lettuce.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Fresh Italian parsley, basil, chives and French red shallots.
