What’s In The Box? August 25-31

Paella Party
The summer harvest is at its peak, with favorites such as heirloom tomatoes, eggplant, green beans and cucumbers ripening in abundance as we reach the end of August. This week, put these gorgeous offerings to delicious use in a traditional Spanish-style paella crafted with our own signature chicken stock and a pinch of fragrant saffron. Also featuring Italian Rustica bread and farm-fresh fruit including melons, plums and grapes, this summery lineup is fit for a crowd—gather ‘round the paella pan, uncork a bottle of white wine and enjoy!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Paella Rice

Traditional short-grain Valenciano rice from Spain to help craft this week’s simple and summery paella!

Saffron Threads

Sure to lend light smoky flavor to this week’s paella, this beloved Mediterranean spice is also known for its distinct and irresistible aroma (it was even used to scent the baths and public halls of imperial Rome!).

Farm & Larder Chicken Stock

Made from roasted Bella Luna chickens, our signature stock is simmered slowly for hours with carrots, onions and celery and seasoned with a dash of sea salt. This immensely flavorful broth adds a beautiful richness to the likes of soup, pasta and of course, paella.

Italian Rustica Bread

This freshly-baked loaf is made at a small bakery in Snohomish using a wild yeast starter, which creates an airy, chewy bread and a delightfully-crisp crust. This bread is wonderfully sliced and grilled for crostini—rub each lightly-charred piece with a cut clove of garlic for extra flavor.

Lirac Blanc ‘Le Classique’ 2014

This white blend is a lovely summer sipper: Hailing from the Rhone Valley’s Domaine la Rocalière in France and made from 60% Grenache Blanc and 40% Clairette grapes, it is lush and full-flavored with hints of florals and stone fruits.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. The “girls” are enjoying the warm late summer afternoons and accompanying long evenings, chasing bugs and eating tasty green weeds we pull from the garden.

Fresh Fruit

Santa Claus melon, Italian plums, lemons and fresh-picked grapes from the Bella Luna Grape House.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes eggplant, Walla Walla sweet onions, purple carrots, yellow Romano beans, Treviso radicchio, English cucumbers, mini-Mexican gherkins, yellow zucchini, Padrón peppers, Chioggia beets and a mixed variety of heirloom tomatoes.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Multi-head red leaf lettuce and frisée.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Enjoy a bevy of fragrant herbs this week: Garlic, parsley, basil, oregano and rosemary.
