What’s In The Box? February 2-8

Winter into Spring
No matter if the current iteration of Punxsutawney Phil spots his shadow today or not, the arrival of February means that spring days can’t be too far away. This week, toast to the upcoming season with a sunny, satisfying lineup comprised of our Nonna Pat’s spicy puttanesca sauce, sweet organic Italian sausage and tomato-kissed Pomodoro loaf, as well as fresh produce like gold beets, red Chantenay carrots and Lacinato kale. Also included this week: Our own sourdough starter to use in a bevy of recipes ranging from rolls to hotcakes. To spring!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Nonna Pat’s Puttanesca Sauce

Crafted according to the treasured family recipe passed down from our own Nonna, this red sauce is lovingly-made from garden-grown tomatoes picked at the height of summer, plus fragrant garlic, olives and red pepper flakes. This week, try it incorporated into a satisfying Italian-style ribollita soup—see recipes for details.

Double DD Meats Sweet Italian Sausage

Spiced with garlic and fresh herbs, this flavorful sausage is made in-house from grain-fed pork at Double DD Meats, a family-owned and -run butchery in Mountlake Terrace.

Pomodoro Loaf

Flecked with flavorful sun-dried tomatoes and herbs, plus a kiss of sea salt, this savory loaf is baked just for us at a small bakery in Snohomish.

Sourdough Starter

Whether it’s used to craft delicious hotcakes, a rustic focaccia or warm-from-the-oven dinner rolls (see recipes!), a sourdough starter is a treasured tool in any baker’s kitchen—and this week we’re sharing ours with you.

Bodegas Luzon 2009 Altos de Luzón

This modern red wine is crafted from a distinct blend of Monastrell, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown in the Jumilla region located along the Mediterranean coast of south-eastern Spain. Rich and intense, it also features notes of dried fruit and leather.

Farm Fresh Eggs

As they spend more time snug in their coop during the cold, blustery winter months, our heritage breed laying hens are enjoying an extra helping of grain to supplement their diet, in turn supplying us with eggs in beautiful shades of brown, blue and green.

Housemade Crème Fraîche

Crafted in our farmstead creamery from pasteurized organic sweet cream, this rich and silky crème fraîche is delicious mixed in with baked eggs.

Cherry Valley Dairy Cultured Butter with Gray Sea Salt

This silky-smooth butter from Duvall-based Cherry Valley Dairy combines sweet, grassy butter with artisan gray sea salt for a flavor profile that wows—spread it on warm sourdough rolls this week for the perfect finishing touch.

Farm & Larder Chicken Stock

Made from roasted Bella Luna chickens, this flavorful stock is simmered slowly for hours with carrots, onions and celery and seasoned with a dash of sea salt.

Plum Jam

Our housemade jam is crafted from gorgeous orchard plums lovingly handpicked off the tree each morning during the summer harvest. To preserve the wonderful fresh flavor and color, we make this jam with plums, organic cane sugar, and pectin.

Farm-Fresh Fruit

Orin apples from BelleWood Acres in Lynden, plus Cara Cara oranges.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes red and gold beets, Brussels sprouts, lower Salmon River winter squash, red Chantenay carrots, yellow onions and Sieglinde yellow potatoes.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Lacinato kale and peppery arugula.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Fresh thyme, garlic and shallots.
