What’s In The Box? June 1-7

Sweet Sunshine
Sunny days have returned! Fittingly, this week’s box pays homage to the best spring ingredients—artichokes, spring onions and Tokyo Market turnips—while looking forward to summer with the first crop of locally-grown strawberries. Also included in this sunny lineup: Ingredients for a beautiful beet and fennel salad, plus fresh shortcakes from Snohomish Bakery and housemade crème fraîche to end the meal on a sweet note.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Fresh Strawberries

Summer is calling: The first luscious local strawberries from Caruso Farms in Snohomish have arrived. Tender and ripe, these local beauties are best enjoyed right away along with this week’s fluffy and light shortcakes and a dollop of our own crème fraîche.

Shortcakes

Baked just for us by Snohomish Bakery, these light and lovely shortcakes are kissed with just the right amount of sugar—split ‘em, toast ‘em and top with freshly-sliced strawberries.

Housemade Crème Fraîche

Crafted in our farmstead creamery from pasteurized organic sweet cream, this rich and silky crème fraîche is delicious dolloped on this week’s dessert.

Bodegas Ontañon Crianza 2013

Bodegas Ontañon is a family-owned winery located in Spain’s Rioja region—the country’s most well known. Growing the traditional grapes of Rioja, the winery’s old vine plantings are rooted at higher elevations, up to 2,800 feet, making for deep wines that show great equilibrium. A beautiful blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha grapes, this particular red blend displays notes of black fruit and spice with natural and delicate acidity.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Busy scratching through the straw mulch in their spacious outdoor run looking for tasty bugs and worms on nice days, our heritage breed laying hens are also thoroughly enjoying a bounty of sprouting seeds and spring popweed, in turn supplying us with fresh eggs in beautiful shades of blues, green and brown.

Seasonal Organic Fruits & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes kohlrabi, baby red potatoes, Tokyo Market baby turnips, artichokes, Chioggia beets, fennel, baby carrots and spring onions, plus fresh lemons.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Little Gem baby Romaine lettuce and colorful spring salad mix.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Fresh garlic, oregano and mint.
