What’s In The Box? May 24-30

Forager’s Delight
From the season’s first fiddleheads to pretty pink radishes, spring produce continues to abound, both in the garden and foraged from the wild. Thus, this week’s box sings with such additional highlights as baby Shiitake mushrooms, snap peas and flowering sage; combine these beauties with such provisions as multigrain bread, nutty Alpine-style cheese, chicken stock and our own strawberry preserves, and let the flavors of spring delight everyone at your table.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Locally-Foraged Fiddleheads

A true spring delicacy! These tightly-coiled tips of the Lady fern are only available for a short time in the spring and boast a grassy, slightly-nutty flavor when sautéed—they are also a lovely addition to pastas, risottos or stir fries.

Baby Shiitake Mushrooms

With their curled umbrella-shaped caps and tender thin stalks, baby Shiitake mushrooms release a garlic-pine aroma when cooked and are beloved for their rich, earthy flavor.

Farm & Larder Chicken Stock

Made from roasted Bella Luna chickens, our flavorful stock is simmered slowly for hours with carrots, onions and celery and seasoned with a dash of sea salt.

Fresh Multigrain Bread

Made in downtown Snohomish by our favorite local bakery, this round loaf is made with locally-milled Shepherd’s Grain flour, seven different whole grains, a hint of honey and toasted sunflower seeds.

Vigilance Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Crafted from 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc grapes fermented in stainless steel tanks, this California white is Smooth and flavorful, with plenty of pear and light herb aromas. The wine’s inherent light spice, plus mineral and melon flavors, offer a good sense of layering on the palate, all leading to a generous mouthfeel and lingering finish.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Busy scratching through the straw mulch in their spacious outdoor run looking for tasty bugs and worms on nice days, our heritage breed laying hens are also thoroughly enjoying a bounty of sprouting seeds and spring popweed, in turn supplying us with fresh eggs in beautiful shades of blues, green and brown.

Acme Farms Alpine-Style Cheese

This firm, nutty cheese is crafted in town of Acme with rsbT-free milk from the jersey cows at Lynden-based Twin Brook Creamery and boasts a sweet, fruity flavor when young that becomes more complex and earthy with age.

Strawberry Preserves

Our housemade freezer-style jam is crafted from ripe, juicy strawberries hand-picked each morning during peak season. To preserve the wonderful fresh flavor and color, we make this jam with berries, organic cane sugar, fresh-squeezed lemon juice and pectin. (That’s it!)

Fresh Fruit

Ruby-red rhubarb and lemons.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Red and green lettuces.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables & Fruit

This week’s produce selection also includes rainbow Swiss chard, Pink Beauty radishes, pac choi, baby red potatoes, yellow onions, Romanesco, snap peas and Hakurei turnips.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Enjoy a bountiful selection of fragrant herbs this week: Cilantro, parsley, thyme, mint and flowering sage.
