What’s In The Box? October 5-11

Season to Season
What a beautiful start to October! With crisp nights and sunny days, we are still enjoying the best of both summer and fall, with lingering late crops—like gorgeous Sungold cherry tomatoes—ripening right alongside the Tokyo Market turnips, red beets and more. This week, explore this unique convergence of seasons with fixings for a flavorful risotto topped with our handcrafted duxelles, plus farm-fresh eggs, Gruyère cheese bread and savory fig and grape preserves as well as a beautiful selection of produce.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Arborio Rice

This round-grain rice comes from the Po River Valley region of Italy and is named for the town of Arborio located in the heart of the region. When cooked with our flavorful chicken stock and a splash of white wine, it becomes creamy and starchy—a great accompaniment to any flavor combination, especially this week’s earthy duxelles crafted from fresh fall mushrooms.

Housemade Duxelles

Try pairing this week’s risotto with our housemade duxelles—a finely chopped mixture of fresh mushrooms, shallots and herbs sautéed in butter and wine.

Housemade Chicken Stock

Made from roasted Bella Luna chickens, this flavorful stock is simmered slowly for hours with carrots, onions, parsley and celery and seasoned with a dash of sea salt.

Cims de Montsant Garnatxa Carinyena 2010

Made from a beautiful blend of 65% Granacha and 35% Carinena grapes, this medium-bodied Spanish red blend is aged in French barrels for five months and features notes of mulberry and dark plum.

Gruyère Cheese Bread

Made in nearby Snohomish by our favorite bakery, this freshly-baked loaf balances sweet, nutty Gruyère cheese with a light, crisp crust. Absolutely delicious toasted or re-warmed in the oven—just sprinkle with a few drops of water and bake at 350° for about 15 minutes.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. With the shorter days of fall, the girls are up with the sun to roam the outdoors where they still enjoy the warm afternoons. Bedtime is coming much earlier now, as we see them heading into their house to roost as the sun is going down.

Grana-Style Cheese

Our hard Grana-style cheese is crafted from part-skim cow’s milk to allow for an extra-long aging of 36 months or more. Ideal for sprinkling a grating atop risotto, the drum-shaped cheese is turned and rubbed with olive oil during aging to create a smooth, golden rind.

Savory Fig & Grape Preserves

Ripe figs and juicy grapes create the dynamic flavor combination for this farmhouse favorite. An excellent pairing for a variety of cheeses including goat and blue, they are also a wonderful addition to a charcuterie board or antipasto platter.

Ripe Fruit

Beautiful Orcas pears from Cloud Mountain Farm in Everson, Washington.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

Eggplant, purple beans, sweet grilling peppers, mixed summer squash, Tokyo Market turnips, Sungold cherry tomatoes, sweet bicolor and white corn, red beets and sweet yellow onions.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Escarole and Little Gem mini Romaine lettuce.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Italian parsley, garlic, shallots, rosemary and thyme.

Ambatalia Furoshiki

This beautifully-crafted cloth from California company Ambatalia is incredibly versatile: Wrap up a casserole to keep warm for a party, tote a loaf of bread or use it as a stylish kitchen towel.
