What’s In The Box? September 8-14

Summer into Fall
Though September has brought with it rain showers, falling leaves and other signs that fall is indeed just around the corner, here at Bella Luna and the other nearby farms we are continuing to enjoy a bounty of late-summer crops—from rainbow cherry tomatoes and spicy peppers to juicy melons. Thus, this week’s box is our ode to the last of summer, with the likes of eggplant, cucumbers and summer squash included alongside a beautiful Bordeaux Blanc wine, fresh pumpernickel bread and English Cheddar cheese.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Quinoa

This protein-packed super grain is the perfect pairing for late summer favorites such as cherry tomatoes and cucumbers thanks to its inherent rich and nutty flavor. This week, try it tossed with crisp produce and fresh coriander for a satisfying lunch or suppertime side—see recipes for details.

Pumpernickel Bread

Baked fresh just for us by a small bakery in nearby Snohomish, this slightly-sweet rye bread loaf is wonderful served thinly-sliced with a wedge of this week’s cheddar cheese.

English Cheddar Cheese

Crafted in blocks from pasteurized cow’s milk, this traditional English Cheddar cheese is robust in taste, aged for a minimum of nine months to give the finished product a firm, round texture and lots of ‘bite’.

Château Haut Ryan Bourdeaux Blanc 2015

This light and crisp French Bourdeaux Blanc will pair beautifully this week’s quinoa as well as salads and white fish. Extremely well-balanced with a lingering finish, it features an aromatic fresh nose of newly-cut hay, grapefruit and minerals.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. With shorter days that signal the coming of fall, the girls are up with the sun to roam the outdoors where they still enjoy the warm afternoons. Bedtime is coming much earlier now, as we see them heading into their house to roost as the sun is going down.

Blueberry Jam

Made here at Bella Luna in our farmhouse kitchen from fresh-picked blueberries, organic cane sugar and pectin.

Fresh Fruit

Dapple Dandy pluots and Canary melon.

Fresh Fruit

Charentais melon from Local Roots Farms.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes golden beets, rainbow cherry tomatoes, Walla Walla sweet onions, sweet and spicy Krimzon Lee peppers, Amarosa fingerling potatoes, Patty Pan summer squash, English cucumbers, eggplant and purple carrots.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Arugula, purslane, Little Gem Romaine lettuce.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Green coriander, Italian parsley and garlic.
