What’s In The Box? May 5-11

Glorious May
The arrival of May means spring truly is in full swing as we are daily reminded thanks to recent warm days and the various crops ripening in the garden. This week, enjoy spring in all its glory with a wonderful assortment of produce ranging from locally-grown hothouse cherry tomatoes and Walla Walla salad onions to fresh rhubarb and herbs like mint, lovage and chive blossoms. Also included: Fresh rhubarb and almond crisp topping, plus all the fixins’ for a satisfying PB&J sandwich on Challah bread. Enjoy!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Big Spoon Roasters Chai Spice Nut Butter

A fusion of classic American and Indian flavors, this addictive spread from North Carolina’s Big Spoon Roasters blends traditional Masala Chai comprised of fragrant cardamom, cloves, ginger, vanilla and black pepper with freshly-milled peanuts, almonds, wildflower honey and sea salt.

Strawberry Preserves

Our housemade jam is crafted from ripe, juicy strawberries handpicked each morning during peak season. To preserve the wonderful fresh flavor and color, we make this jam with berries, organic cane sugar, fresh-squeezed lemon juice and pectin. (That’s it!)

Challah Bread

Baked just for us by our favorite bakery in Snohomish, this cylindrical loaf boasts a sweet, rich flavor thanks to a traditional base of silky eggs, Shepherd’s Grain flour and a touch of sugar.

Idilico Albariño 2014

This Washington winery focuses exclusively on Spanish varietals—grown in the cooler area of Yakima near Prosser, the Spanish Albariño grape is the star of the light and refreshing wine included in this week’s delivery. Boasting notes of citrus and tropical fruit, the winemaker advises drinking it “anytime the sun shines”.

Housemade Crème Fraîche

Crafted in our farmstead creamery from pasteurized organic sweet cream, this rich and silky crème fraîche is delicious dolloped on a fresh-baked rhubarb crisp.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. With the arrival of longer and warmer days, the “girls” are enjoying long afternoons in the sun, chasing bugs and eating tasty green weeds we pull from the garden.

Almond Fruit Crisp Topping

Wonderful paired with this week’s rhubarb, our signature fruit crisp topping is crafted from organic cane sugar, ground almonds, dried cranberries, almond flour and sweet butter.

Fresh Fruit

Beautiful spring rhubarb, limes and lemons.

King Oyster Mushrooms

Locally-foraged King Oyster mushrooms, which boast a beautiful meaty, mellow flavor when roasted in a little butter and chicken stock.

Seasonal Organic Fruits & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes Tokyo Market turnips, rainbow cauliflower, French Breakfast radishes, French fingerling potatoes, Walla Walla salad onions and greenhouse cherry tomatoes from Hedlin Farms in Mount Vernon.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Spicy salad mix, plus Tom Thumb and Little Gem baby lettuces.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Enjoy a bounty of bright herbs this week: Oregano, mint, thyme, shallots, garlic, chive blossoms and green garlic. Also included: fresh lovage stalks, a parsley-like herb that boasts the same crispness as celery, plus a pungent herbal flavor. A wonderful garnish for pastas and soups, it can also be tossed in with salad greens for extra punch, or used to flavor roasted chicken (just tuck into the cavity before roasting).
