What’s In The Box? April 28 – May 4
Good Morning
Rise and shine, it’s brunch time: Break your fast with this week’s lineup of favorites, from organic sausages and cinnamon-raisin bread to sweet and nutty organic cracked farro porridge and of course, fresh eggs from our flock of heritage breed laying hens. Spring is really starting to sing in the gardens, too, as you’ll also find fresh asparagus, pea and sunflower shoots, ruby-red rhubarb, turnips and Japanese Misome greens all in your box, as well as fragrant herbs and Belgian endive. Good morning, indeed!
Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:
Bluebird Grain Farm Organic Cracked Farro Porridge
Used in Northern Italy as a savory porridge, this milled-to-order organic cracked farro porridge from Winthrop’s Bluebird Grain Farm is a nutritious whole-grain cereal that can be used as a hot cereal or prepared polenta-style with fresh herbs and roasted vegetables or meat. Cracked in a fine grind from the farm’s signature whole-grain Emmer Farro, this porridge is an excellent source of protein, fiber, phosphorus and trace minerals, plus it’s naturally sweet, rich, and nutty with a creamy texture.
Skagit River Ranch Breakfast Sausage
With a flavor profile that includes hints of sweet maple syrup and savory spices, these incredible breakfast sausages are made from all-natural pork. Raised on the Skagit River Ranch in Sedro-Woolley, these pampered pigs roam outdoors in certified-organic pasture land to root and dig, thriving on a diet of flax seed, corn and wheat.
Fresh Raisin Bread
Made with natural starter, cinnamon and moist, chewy Flame raisins, this freshly-baked loaf is from our favorite bakery in nearby Snohomish.
Big Spoon Roasters Chai Spice Nut Butter
A fusion of classic American and Indian flavors, this addictive spread from North Carolina’s Big Spoon Roasters blends a traditional Masala Chai comprised of fragrant cardamom, cloves, ginger, vanilla and black pepper with freshly-milled peanuts, heirloom Mission almonds, raw wildflower honey and sea salt to create a bright burst of flavor in every spoonful.
Milbrandt Vineyards 2020 Rosé
The Syrah-dominant Rosé from this Washington winery is dry, full-bodied and lush, with gorgeous red berry fruits like raspberry and strawberry. It shows extraordinary bright fruit and floral notes on the nose. A crisp profile, hints of grapefruit pith, and layered minerality make this vintage everything you could want in a dry Rosé.
Farm Fresh Eggs
As they spend more time outdoors in their run, our small flock of heritage breed laying hens are enjoying succulent popweed pulled from the gardens along with an extra helping of grain to supplement their diet, continuing to give us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.
Vanilla Bean Crème Fraîche
House made creme crème fraîche sweetened with local honey and vanilla bean.
Spring Rhubarb
It’s rhubarb season: This ruby-red spring favorite boasts a wonderful sweet-tart flavor.
Fresh Organic Greens
Pea shoots, sunflower shoots and red and green Belgian endive (also known as witloof chicory!)
Misome
This fairly-new Japanese green is a cross between Komatsuna and Tatsoi, and boasts beautiful, glossy round savoyed leaves and thick, tender stems. We love it as a base in springtime salads, as an accompaniment to other greens or simply sautéed alone with some fresh garlic.
Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables
This week’s produce selection also includes Hakurei turnips, asparagus and onions, as well as Honeycrisp apples.
Fresh Garden Herbs
Garlic and Italian parsley from the garden at Bella Luna Farms.
