What’s In The Box? April 9-15

Culinary Adventures
For many of us, more time at home has meant more time experimenting in the kitchen, and this week’s box is full of fresh new ingredients for you to play with: Try your hand at homemade crêpes crafted from Fairhaven Mill’s certified-organic buckwheat flour; poach some local duck eggs to serve with spring asparagus and a light chive-lemon aioli; and, end things on a sweet note with the ingredients for a traditional-style Italian torta filled with our own cherry-plum jam. Also included: Pain au Levain bread; a refreshing French Rosé and other favorites like Cremini mushrooms, Granny Smith apples and a mix of braising greens.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box:

Fairhaven Mill Organic Buckwheat Flour

Nestled in the Skagit Valley, this family and farmer-owned certified-organic flour mill sources their grains from family farms across the country, guaranteeing freshness and quality from tilth to table. This particular buckwheat flour makes exceptional crepes or a traditional Northern Italian-style torta—see recipes for details on both!

Duck Eggs

With near-transparent egg whites and color-rich oversize yolks, these local duck eggs are a chef’s dream, lending flavorful appeal to a variety of dishes.

Pain au Levain Bread

This slightly-nutty, slightly-sweet sourdough loaf epitomizes French country-style baking with a chewy crust and light, airy interior. Baked by our favorite bakery in Snohomish, this traditional Pain au Levain is crafted using the bakery’s own sourdough starter.

Ravoire et Fils 2018 Domaine des Bellugues Rosé

From a small family estate in France named for the fireflies that live around the vineyard, this Rosé is crisp, light and refreshing, with enough fruitiness to balance the acidity.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Spending their time dodging raindrops on wet spring days, or strutting around their enclosure on sunny ones, our heritage breed laying hens are now also enjoying the tasty green popweed we pull from the garden, in turn supplying us with eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.

F&L Crisp Topping & Cherry Plum Jam

Use these two housemade items—our signature crisp topping made with organic cane sugar, ground almonds, dried cranberries, almond flour and sweet butter, and tart-sweet cherry plum preserves—to craft this week’s Italian buckwheat cake. Known as schwarzplententorte in German or torta di granosaraceno in Italian, this simple, gluten-free cake is made wonderfully moist and dense with buckwheat and grated apple, then filled with tart jam after baking. Enjoy!

Seasonal Organic Greens

Spinach, claytonia, pea shoots and arugula.

Seasonal Organic Fruits & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes cauliflower, asparagus, Cremini mushrooms, baby red potatoes and a mix of braising greens, plus Granny Smith apples and Meyer lemons.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Garlic, thyme, chive and mint from the walled garden and greenhouse at Bella Luna Farms.
