What’s In The Box? August 12-18

Summer All-Stars
Melons! Peaches! Tomatoes! These late summer staples are arriving in abundance here in August and this week’s box celebrates them in all their sun-ripened glory, as well as other favorites such as zucchini and cucumbers, basil and blueberries. Also joining these summer all-stars: Freshly-baked Italian Rustica bread, imported artisanal pasta, farm-fresh eggs from our heritage-breed hens and salad-ready garden greens. Long live summer!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Ripe Summer Fruit

A trio that practically sings late summer splendor: Juicy Tuscan melon, ripe yellow peaches and beautiful blueberries!

Imported Fusilli Col Buco Pasta

Crafted in the traditional Italian style from semolina flour and cut using Old World bronze dies, this artisanal pasta is imported by Rustichella d’Abruzzo.

Italian Rustica Bread

This freshly-baked loaf is made at a small bakery in Snohomish using a wild yeast starter, which creates an airy, chewy bread and a delightfully-crisp crust. This bread is wonderfully sliced and grilled for crostini—rub each lightly-charred piece with a cut clove of garlic for extra flavor.

Jean-Luc Colombo Cape Bleue Rosé 2020

Lovely for a hot summer’s afternoon, this invigorating rosé is a dusty-pink blend of Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes. The raspberry and watermelon flavors are zesty and cutting, edged by crushed mineral and salt as well as a lingering, thirst-quenching acidity.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Busy scratching through the straw mulch in their spacious outdoor run looking for tasty bugs and worms, our heritage breed laying hens supply us with fresh eggs in beautiful shades of cream, beige and brown.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Peppery arugula greens, Little Gem Romaine lettuces and Treviso radicchio.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes tomatoes, mixed cherry tomatoes, fennel, Piricicaba sprouting broccoli, zucchini and cucumbers.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Oaxacan oregano, garlic, basil and chives from the walled garden and greenhouse at Bella Luna Farms, plus papalo, an aromatic herb native to Mexico with a flavor reminiscent of cilantro and arugula.
