What’s In The Box? February 13-20

Lots of Love
In honor of Valentine’s Day, this week’s box embraces two of our greatest loves: fresh, seasonal fare and gathering around the table with the ones we adore most. Thus, this rustic, romantic menu is fit for sharing with flavorful fish stock and our hand-crafted starter base to combine in a robust cioppino stew, plus crusty Pain au Levain bread and an all-star salad trio—peppery Mizuna greens, juicy oranges and bright citrus vinaigrette. Also included: Warmly-spiced pear butter, farm-fresh eggs and heart-shaped sugar cookies to end your evening on a sweet note.
Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

F&L Cioppino Soup Base

Made from sun-ripened tomatoes and flavorful onions, as well as our own signature blend of spices, this housemade starter provides a warm, flavorful base for the classic San Francisco stew—simply simmer with fish stock and an assemblage of fresh seafood like mussels, clams, crab and cod, then top your steaming-hot bowl with a smattering of micro basil and serve with warm bread for dipping.

Lummi Island Northwest Wild Fish Stock

This fantastic locally-made stock will lend incredible flavor to this week’s soup, hand-crafted in small batches from halibut, salmon and cod, plus organic veggies, white wine, lemon juice and spices.

Pain au Levain Bread

This slightly-nutty, slightly-sweet sourdough loaf embodies country-style French baking with a chewy crust and light, airy interior. Baked just for us at a small bakery in Snohomish, this traditional Pain au Levain is crafted using the bakery’s own sourdough starter.

Sagelands 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon

This lovely Columbia Valley features subdued aromas of green pepper, herbs, cherry and a touch of mesquite, all of which lead to sweet, elegant fruit flavors. The suave, palate-coating tannins are balanced by bright acids, and the wine finishes with hints of spice.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our new flock of heritage breed laying hens are on an early-to-bed, later-to-rise schedule with the short daylight hours. As they spend more time snug in their coop, the “girls” are enjoying an extra helping of “scratch” (mixed grains and ground oyster shell) to supplement their diet, continuing to give us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.

Citrus Vinaigrette

Our bright and lively housemade vinaigrette is kissed olive oil, farmstead honey and fresh citrus juices—and is equally delicious tossed with roasted vegetables as it is with salad greens!

Pear Butter

Fragrant with warming spices like cinnamon, this housemade spread highlights the mellow, sweet flavors of orchard-picked Bella Luna pears.

Heart-Shaped Sugar Cookies

Indulge in a little Valentine’s Day treat with these fresh-baked cookies!

Fresh Seasonal Fruit

Cara Cara and blood oranges, plus Meyer lemons.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Micro basil and peppery Mizuna greens.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection includes fennel, celery, carrots, and leeks.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Garlic, shallots and Italian parsley from the walled garden and greenhouse at Bella Luna Farms.
