What’s In The Box? February 3-9

Light & Bright
We’re keeping things fresh to kick off the month of February with this lineup of light, bright and flavorful ingredients—from spicy-savory chorizo sausage and creamy queso fresco cheese to cinnamon-kissed apple butter and our housemade blueberry vinaigrette to drizzle over salad greens. Also including fresh multigrain bread, garden-grown herbs, Fiji ginger almond butter from Big Spoon Roasters, and both chicken and duck eggs, as well as seasonal produce like parsnips, red beets and winter squash, this box is sure to perk up your palate all week long. Enjoy!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Skagit River Ranch Chorizo Sausage

This pig has some kick! Spiced with cumin, coriander and Ancho chili powder, these flavorful sausage links from our friends at the Skagit River Ranch in Sedro-Woolley are crafted from their famous all-natural pork.

Sliced Multigrain Bread

Crafted in nearby Snohomish by our favorite bakery, this healthy freshly-baked loaf is made with locally-milled Shepherd’s Grain flour and seven different whole grains, plus a hint of honey and toasted sunflower seeds.

Saviah Cellars ‘The Jack’ Chardonnay

This delicious wine from the Columbia Valley opens with scents of pear, apples, and tropical fruit with hints of lemon and vanilla. The palate is fresh, clean and crisp with beautiful balance expressed through flavors of stone fruit and Gala apples.

Queso Fresco

This creamy soft cheese is crafted in the traditional Latin American style and is wonderful crumbled over salad greens or baked into a chorizo frittata—see this week’s recipes for more details on both ideas!

Duck Eggs

With near-transparent egg whites and color-rich oversize yolks, these local duck eggs from Doyle’s Eggs and Orange Star Farm are a chef’s dream, lending flavorful appeal to a variety of dishes.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens are on an early-to-bed, later-to-rise schedule with the short daylight hours. As they spend more time snug in their coop, the “girls” are enjoying an extra helping of grain to supplement their diet, continuing to give us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.

Housemade Apple Butter

A farmhouse favorite crafted from fresh-picked Bella Luna orchard apples, slow-cooked in a cider reduction and seasoned with organic cane sugar and warm spices.

Big Spoon Roasters Fiji Ginger Almond Butter

This scrumptious spread from North Carolina’s Big Spoon Roasters combines fresh-roasted Mission almonds with golden-hued crystallized ginger sourced from Fiji, as well as organic cane sugar and a hint of sea salt. The vibrant almond butter is delightful on waffles or pancakes, incorporated into an AB&J, or for snacking right out of the jar.

Blueberry Vinaigrette

This refreshing, sweet-spiced berry vinaigrette is crafted in our farmhouse kitchen.

Seasonal Fruit

Fuji apples and Meyer lemons.

Fresh Organic Greens

Asian mixed greens and a colorful seasonal salad mix.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection includes sweet yellow onions, red beets, parsnips, carrots and heirloom potatoes. Also in your box: Tetsukabuto squash, a Kabocha/Butternut variety bred in Japan during the middle of last century. (The translation of the Japanese name is “iron helmet,” after the famed hardness of the flesh and rind.) Sweet and nutty, it is extremely versatile in a variety of cuisines.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Parsley, thyme and Music garlic from the walled garden at Bella Luna Farms.
