What’s In The Box? July 16-22

Midsummer Splendor
As summer produce continues to ripen apace in the garden—from the baby cabbages and slicing cucumbers to sweet peppers and cherry tomatoes—this week’s box puts the seasonal bounty to delicious use in a farm-fresh menu starring peppery Greek sausage atop rich Spanish lentils. Garlic fougasse bread, light-bodied Vinho Verde wine and a savory galette topped with blue cheese, figs and arugula also anchor this midsummer meal.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Double D Meats Greek Sausage

This pig has kick! Spiced with fresh-cracked pepper, garlic and fresh herbs, this flavorful sausage is housemade from grain-fed pork at Double D Meats, a family-owned and run butchery located in Mountlake Terrace. Try it this week sliced and served over a bed of slow-simmered lentil beans with sautéed sweet peppers.

Trikona Spanish Lentils

High in protein, these beautiful imported legumes provide a rich and hearty base for this week’s Greek sausage.

Garlic Fougasse Bread

Baked just for us at a small bakery in Snohomish, this rustic flatbread is ideal for sharing. Similar in style to traditional foccacia, the artisanal-style loaf is studded with fresh garlic to give it extra depth and flavor.

Aveleda Vinho Verde

Vibrant and vivacious, this unique Portuguese wine presents a soft and silky elegance on the palate, with hints of spicy citrine flavors. A cross between a Pinot Grigio and a Riesling, it is best served chilled and pairs beautifully with this week’s blue cheese galette.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, blue and green, perfect for this week’s salad. With the long warm days of summer, the “girls” spend their days outdoors chasing tasty bugs, taking dust baths, and enjoying the healthy greens and raspberry leaves we feed them from the garden.

Westward Blue Cheese

Similar in style to a gorgonzola, this creamy soft cheese boasts a gorgeous marbled center and flavorful bite, making it a wonderful complement to this week’s savory galette dough and ripe, juicy figs.

Galette Dough

Crafted from all-purpose flour and organic butter, this housemade pastry dough adapted from a beloved Alice Waters recipe bakes up light and crisp, with a smooth buttery taste that pairs well with the classic pairing of blue cheese and figs—see this week’s recipes for details.

White Balsamic & Blood Orange Vinaigrette

Our vibrant housemade vinaigrette, tart-sweet with fresh herbs and splashes of blood orange juice and white balsamic vinegar.

Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection includes sweet peppers, slicing cucumbers, Caraflex and Alcosa mini cabbages, mixed summer squashes, cherry tomatoes, sweet spring onions, red radishes, green beans and fennel. Also included: Lemons, ripe blueberries and juicy figs.

Seasonal Organic Greens

A beautiful selection of red Salanova and Little Gem baby lettuces, Bianca di Chioggia radicchio and peppery arugula.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Organically-grown Italian parsley, basil, savory, rosemary, mint, garlic and shallots from the walled garden at Bella Luna.
