The Italian summer calls to mind visions of a crisp glass of wine, homemade pasta and garden-fresh produce simply and beautifully prepared. Hence, this week’s box captures the flavors of summer by way of Italy with locally-crafted bucatini pasta to toss with baby Shiitake mushrooms, plus fresh sourdough bread and a bevy of beautiful salad greens and ingredients like beets, spring onions, green beans and sugar snap peas. Fresh Bucatini Pasta
Hand-crafted in nearby Bellingham, this spaghetti-like semolina pasta has a hole running through the center—hence the name bucatini, which comes from the Italian buco, meaning “hole”, while bucato means “pierced”.
Baby Shiitake Mushrooms
With their curled umbrella-shaped caps and tender thin stalks, these beautiful organic Shiitake mushrooms release a garlic-pine aroma when cooked and boast a rich, earthy flavor.
Pain au Levain Bread
This slightly-nutty, slightly-sweet sourdough bread epitomizes French country-style baking with a chewy crust and light, airy interior. Baked by our favorite bakery in Snohomish, this traditional Pain au Levain is crafted using the bakery’s own sourdough starter; serve it alongside this week’s pasta to complete the meal.
Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rosé 2018
The Pfalz is a very warm and sunny region, often called the “Tuscany of Germany,” which is where the lovely Pinot grapes for this rosé are grown. The Villa Wolf wine is a true rosé, made with a brief maceration before pressing to extract color. It is light and refreshing, with deliciously bright berry and fruit flavors and a clean, zippy finish.

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. As we hit midsummer, the “girls” are enjoying the long summer afternoons and accompanying lingering evenings, chasing bugs and eating tasty green weeds we pull from the garden.
