What’s In The Box? July 2-8

Fresh Fourth
Fire up the grill and gather family and friends round this week for a flavorful Fourth of July spread highlighted by crisp, cool summer salads. With produce ranging from sweet red peppers and rainbow cherry tomatoes to fresh fennel and juicy blueberries, this heat-beating menu also features housemade chevre and crème fraîche, a refreshing white wine from France and a light and moist lemon olive oil cake kissed with polenta. Shake up a summery cocktail, sit back and enjoy your Independence Day!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Pain au Levain Bread

This slightly-nutty, slightly-sweet sourdough loaf embodies country-style French baking with a chewy crust and light, airy interior. Baked just for us at a small bakery in Snohomish, this traditional Pain au Levain is crafted using the bakery’s own sourdough starter.

Domaine du Tariquet Classic White

This delicious, light and refreshing wine from this heralded French winery displays citrus flavors with a touch of exotic fruit. This easy-drinking wine is perfect as an aperitif to sip while firing up the grill, crafted with a blend of Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc and Gros Manseng.

Fresh Chevre & Crème Fraîche

Creamy, smooth and decadent, this week’s chevre cheese is a true farmhouse favorite. Crafted from whole goat’s milk, it adds rich, robust mouthfeel to a summer salad. Also included: Our housemade crème fraîche, which is rich and silky with pasteurized organic sweet Jersey cream.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens supply us with fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. With the arrival of summer, the “girls” are enjoying long afternoons in the sun, chasing bugs and eating tasty green weeds we pull from the garden.

Lemon Olive Oil Cake Mix

This light and moist cake is a family favorite and boasts a wonderful texture thanks to the inclusion of polenta. Try it for dessert, topped with fresh berries or fruit and a generous dollop of crème fraîche.

Anise Hyssop Simple Syrup

Kissed with the licoricey flavor of anise hyssop, this simple syrup is excellent mixed into summery cocktails or iced teas.

Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection includes shelling peas, Chioggia beets, red radishes, fresh fennel, baby red potatoes, rainbow cherry tomatoes, slicing cucumbers, spring onions and sweet red peppers. Also included: fresh lemons, plump, juicy blueberries, white and black currants, and Rainier cherries. (Hint: Try frozen whole cherries for a refreshing treat on a hot day.)

Seasonal Organic Greens

A beautiful selection of Little Gem lettuce, Treviso radicchio, baby red butter lettuce and escarole.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Organically-grown Italian parsley, Cuban mojito mint, Genovese basil, sage, rosemary, cilantro, garlic and shallots from the walled garden at Bella Luna. Also: Beautiful lavender flowers to help infuse sweet, fragrant flavor into an icy lemonade.
