What’s In The Box? July 29-August 4

Summer Harvest
As July transitions into August, we have started to reach the pinnacle of summer as a bounty of crops seemingly ripen at once—sweet corn, crisp lettuce greens, summer squash (and their blossoms!) and more. Thus, this week’s box pays tribute to the summer harvest with a beautiful assortment of local produce, plus Fairhaven Mill’s organic buckwheat flour, farm-fresh eggs, fragrant herbs and a wonderful assortment of antipasti-ready provisions, from rosemary-olive oil crackers and stone-ground mustard to briny green olives and alpine-style filomena cheese. Bon appetit!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Squash Blossoms

Along with summer squash season come these dainty, edible orange flowers perfect for frying! See this week’s recipes for instructions on how to craft a classic summer starter with these bright blossoms.

Sweet Summer Corn

Sweet, juicy and ultra-fresh: The first of the local summer corn has arrived!

Pane Carasau Sardinian Rosemary & Olive-Oil Crackers

Imported from Italy, these herb-kissed flatbread-style crackers are fit for snacking!

Fairhaven Mill Organic Buckwheat Flour

Nestled in the Skagit Valley, this family and farmer-owned certified-organic flour mill sources their grains from family farms across the country, guaranteeing freshness and quality from tilth to table. This particular buckwheat flour makes exceptional crepes—see recipes for details!

Multigrain Bread

Crafted in nearby Snohomish by our favorite bakery, this healthy freshly-baked loaf is made with locally-milled Shepherd’s Grain flour and seven different whole grains, plus a hint of honey and toasted sunflower seeds.

Domaine Bousquet Pinot Grigio

This Pinot is fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve its varietal typicity and achieve a fruity and expressive character. Light yellow in color with green hues, it features white fruit and citrus aromas followed by a medium body and fruity palate.

Fantello Farmstead Creamery Filomena Cheese

This Enumclaw-based creamery produces beautiful cultured butter and alpine-style cheese. This particular semi-hard, raw cow’s milk raclette-style cheese is incredibly complex with layers of nutty, earthy, grassy notes and hints of hazelnuts and browned butter.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Busy scratching through the straw mulch in their spacious outdoor run looking for tasty bugs and worms, our heritage breed laying hens supply us with fresh eggs in beautiful shades of cream, beige and brown.

Moutarde de Meaux Pommery Mustard

Crafted from mustard seeds, water, vinegar, salt and spices, this immensely-flavorful wholegrain mustard from France has been made with the same time-honored recipe since 1632.

Bella Cerignola Olives

These plump green olives in brine are a wonderful addition to an antipasti platter.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Fava shoots and lettuce mix.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes cauliflower, fennel, Walla Walla sweet onions, cucumber and zucchini.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Italian parsley, basil and Killarney red garlic from the walled garden and greenhouse at Bella Luna Farms, plus papalo, an aromatic herb native to Mexico with a flavor reminiscent of cilantro and arugula.
