What’s In The Box? July 30 – August 5

Sun Ripened
No matter how you pronounce it, the word ‘tomato’ practically sings of summer, the vine-ripened beauties now at their best as the first heirlooms begin to arrive. This week’s box pays homage to the ripe, juicy tomato with mixed heirlooms, nutty farro, imported feta cheese and Greek olives to toss together in salads, plus, a bevy of complementary produce including mini white cucumbers, sweet red peppers and bicolor corn. Uncork a bottle of Italian red, turn on some tunes and get cooking with these beautiful and bright summer favorites.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Rustichelli Whole Grain Farro

Boasting a nutty earthiness and satisfying chew, this ancient rice-sized grain adds hearty appeal to summer’s best produce, like fresh, ripe tomatoes. Try it this week incorporated into a crisp salad or in simply stunning baked tomatoes—see this week’s recipes for ideas.

Focaccia Bread

This soft, chewy Italian-style bread is baked just for us by our favorite local bakery. Ideal for sharing and kissed with fragrant fresh herbs, this focaccia is wonderful topped with feta cheese and olives, or simply dipped in Ritrovo olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Ritrovo Olive Oil

Imported from Italy, this high-quality olive oil is fruity and grassy with silky undertones and a clean finish, making it a wonderful finishing touch for salads, grilled vegetables or bread.

Bella Luna Chicken Stock

Our housemade chicken stock is crafted from Bella Luna chickens and slow-simmered with fresh herbs, cracked pepper and just a pinch of salt.

Kalamata Olives

Plump, rich Kalamata olives to add flavorful appeal to salads and more.

Gia Rosso Langhe 2014

A young wine made from a combination of Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nebbiolo grapes, this Italian wine from the revered Piedmont region is full, fruity and smooth with a gorgeous ruby red color and subtle notes of licorice, earthiness and spice.

Imported Feta Cheese

Creamy with just the right amount of bite, this decadent imported feta is crafted from whole goat and sheep’s milk. Crumble this soft cheese over baked tomatoes, or use in a fresh summery salad.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our flock of heritage breed laying hens produce eggs in beautiful shades of brown, blue and green. During the warm days of summer, the ‘girls’ spend their days outdoors chasing tasty bugs, taking dust baths and enjoying the tasty raspberry leaves we feed them from the garden.

Mixed Heirloom Tomatoes

The first of the Brandywine, Black Prince and Paul Robeson tomatoes—juicy, ripe and incredibly flavorful!

Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes Walla Walla sweet onions, eggplant, mini white cucumbers, assorted summer squash, Anaheim chilis, mixed sweet peppers, baby artichokes and fresh bicolor corn from La Conner Flats Farm. Also included: Lemons, yellow plums and a green-fleshed cantaloupe from Tonnemaker Farm.

Seasonal Organic Greens

A beautiful selection of Little Gem baby lettuce and Variegato di Luisa radicchio.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Organically-grown Italian parsley, pineapple sage, sweet basil, savory, pebbled spearmint, sage, cilantro, shallots and fresh garlic.
