What’s In The Box? June 11-17

Summer’s Here
The sunny rays and climbing temperatures both decree: Summer has arrived! Bask in the refreshing flavors of the season this week with a selection that begs to be enjoyed al fresco with a glass of crisp Rosé in hand: Sunflower seed-kissed whole grain bread, housemade pickled cherries and ruby-red chive blossom vinaigrette, plus a cool salad composed of roasted baby potatoes and seasonal vegetables, tangy blue cheese and all-natural smoked chicken. Enjoy!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Double D Meats Smoked Chicken

Family owned and run since 1955, this Mountlake Terrace butchery only carries naturally raised meats. This includes this week’s smoky, flavorful chicken, which is organically raised at Draper Valley Farm and fed a vegetarian diet sans hormones and antibiotics. Adding a wonderful depth of flavor to any dish, try it this week incorporated into a refreshing summer salad with roasted potatoes and vegetables, plus seasonal greens and blue cheese—see recipes for details.

Fresh Whole-Grain Bread

Crafted in nearby Snohomish by one of our favorite local bakeries, this healthy round loaf is made from locally produced Shepherd’s Grain flour and 7 different whole grains, plus a hint of honey and toasted sunflower seeds.

Château de Rouet Rosé

Grown on the soles of the Esterel mountains, not far from Cannes, Château de Rouet wines rank among the best in Provence. Composed of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, this beautiful pink rosé is fermented at low temperatures to preserve the taste of juicy fresh fruit.

Westward Blue Cheese

Similar to a gorgonzola, this creamy soft cheese boasts a gorgeous marbled center and flavorful bite, making it a wonderful foil for this week’s summer salad with smoked chicken.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. With the arrival of longer and warmer days, the “girls” are enjoying long afternoons in the sun, chasing bugs and eating tasty green weeds we pull from the garden.

Chive Blossom-Honey Vinaigrette

This ruby-red salad dressing is crafted from housemade chive blossom vinegar, apple cider vinegar, raspberries, extra virgin olive oil, fresh cracked pepper, fresh herbs and a touch of Bella Luna Farms honey.

Pickled Cherries

Wonderful tucked into a smoked chicken sandwich on whole-grain loaf or served as a starter alongside a crisp glass of Rosé, these tasty Bing cherries are pickled with vinegar, allspice, cloves, organic sugar and a hint of cinnamon.

Herbed Compound Butter

Made from organic sweet butter, fresh herbs, shallots and fleur del sel.

Seasonal Organic Fruits & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection includes sweet Vidalia onions, Tokyo Market turnips, red radishes, French fingerling potatoes and baby red beets. Also: fresh lemons and Red Raven plums.

Seasonal Organic Greens

A beautiful selection of spicy salad mix, escarole, frisée and Cegolaine baby butter lettuce from One Leaf and Local Roots farms.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Organically-grown Italian parsley, basil, mint, oregano, rosemary, garlic, shallots and anise hyssop from the walled garden at Bella Luna and Bright Ide Acres.
