What’s In The Box? June 2-8

Sweet Sunshine
Sunny days have returned! Fittingly, this week’s box pays homage to the best spring ingredients—sugar snap peas, pea vines and Tokyo Market turnips—while looking forward to summer with the first of the local strawberries and mixed heirloom tomatoes. Also included: Fresh rye bread, a beautiful French Chenin Blanc and all the ingredients for a gorgeous shortcake dessert with our lemon olive oil cake mix and housemade crème fraîche.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Fresh Strawberries

Summer is calling: Another crop of luscious local strawberries has arrived. Tender and ripe, these local beauties are best enjoyed right away, so we’ve included our signature lemon olive oil cake mix and silky crème fraîche to help you whip up a refreshingly-light version of classic strawberry shortcake—see recipes for details.

Lemon Olive Oil Cake Mix

This light and moist cake is a family favorite and boasts a wonderful texture thanks to the inclusion of polenta. Try it for dessert, topped with fresh strawberries and a generous dollop of crème fraîche.

Housemade Crème Fraîche

Crafted in our farmstead creamery from pasteurized organic sweet cream, this rich and silky crème fraîche is delicious dolloped on this week’s dessert.

Rye Bread

This dense, flavorful loaf is baked just for us at our favorite small bakery in Snohomish and is made with medium-grain rye flour and light caraway seed.

Domaine Pichot 2014 Vouvray

This dry Chenin Blanc-style wine hails from the esteemed Loire Valley in France. Boasting hints of honey and bright fruit, it pairs nicely with warm-weather fare such as crisp salads, cheese plates and of course, shortcake.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. The “girls” are enjoying long afternoons in the sun, chasing bugs and eating tasty green weeds we pull from the garden.

Fresh Citrus

Zesty lemons.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes Tokyo Market turnips, sugar snap peas, Lacinato kale, pea vines, cauliflower and mixed red and yellow heirloom tomatoes from Hedlin Farms.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Fresh frisée and Mesclun spicy salad mix, plus red Salanova and Tom Thumb baby lettuces.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Fresh mint, rosemary, garlic and shallots.
