What’s In The Box? June 30 – July 6

JUNE 30-JULY 6

Summery Sunday Supper
Pull some chairs around the patio table, open a few bottles of wine, and gather round for an Italian-themed Sunday supper lineup that is bursting with summery flavors. Featuring such favorites as fresh egg pappardelle, Skagit River Ranch sausages and airy, chewy Italian Rustica bread, this week’s box is also packed with greens including Lacinato kale and crisp mini Romaine lettuces, plus tender herbs, locally-grown heirloom tomatoes, apricots, radishes, mushrooms, and more. Enjoy this summer bounty alongside provisions like our farm-fresh eggs and rich herb chicken stock, and finish it all off on a sweet note with coconut-kissed chocolate Congo bars.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Fresh Egg Pappardelle Pasta

This lovely, fresh handmade pasta is made by our favorite local pasta maker in Bellingham. Tossed with savory Italian sausage and garlic-kissed Lacinato kale greens (see this week’s recipes!), these broad, flat noodles should rightly earn their name, which is derived from the Italian verb ‘to gobble up’.

Skagit River Ranch Italian Sausage

The pampered pigs raised on the Skagit River Ranch in Sedro-Woolley roam outdoors in certified-organic pasture land to root, dig, and cavort as only happy pigs can, thriving on a diet of flax seed, corn and wheat. Spiced with savory herbs, these delectable Italian-style links will add a savory note to pasta.

Locally-Grown Heirloom Tomatoes

It’s tomato time: This week, enjoy a beautiful selection of mixed heirloom tomatoes from Hedlin Farms in La Conner.

Italian Rustica Bread

This freshly-baked loaf is made at a small bakery in Snohomish using a wild yeast starter, which creates an airy, chewy bread and a delightfully-crisp crust. This bread is wonderfully sliced and grilled for crostini—rub each lightly-charred piece with a cut clove of garlic for extra flavor.

Clos Des Lumières Les Vignes de Papy Petit Verdot 2020

Petit Verdot is a red wine grape whose small, thick-skinned berries are valued for their depth of color, and this wine from the South of France is no exception. Boasting a beautiful, deep ruby color and bright, fresh fruit notes, it will pair nicely with this week’s pasta.

Farm Fresh Eggs

As they spend lots of time outdoors in their run, our small flock of heritage breed laying hens are enjoying succulent popweed pulled from the gardens along with an extra helping of grain to supplement their diet, continuing to give us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.

Housemade Herb Chicken Stock

Made from roasted Bella Luna chickens and a bevy of fragrant garden-grown herbs, our rich housemade stock is also simmered with carrots, onions, parsley and celery and seasoned with just a dash of sea salt.

Fresh Organic Greens

Enjoy a bounty of tender greens this week: Lacinato kale, Rosaine and Little Gem mini Romaine lettuces, Butter lettuce, frisée and red vein spinach.

Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes cauliflower, Hakurei turnips, Cremini mushrooms and red radishes, plus lemons and apricots.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Oregano, basil, thyme, green garlic and Italian parsley from the herb gardens at Bella Luna.

Congo Bars

For a twist on the classic, these soft and chewy chocolate dessert bars are crafted with a truly delicious coconut-chocolate crumb base layer.
