What’s In The Box? May 12-18

Springtime Fresh

This week’s glorious sunshine has us hankering for equally light and bright dishes on the table. Hence, this week’s lineup is full of fresh fare, from herb compound butter and sheep’s milk feta cheese to farm-fresh eggs and locally-foraged morel mushrooms. In addition to these provisions, enjoy a wide variety of pungent greens and fragrant herbs, Gruyère cheese bread and produce like spring asparagus, radishes and broccoli rabe.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Morel Mushrooms

These seasonal mushrooms are only available in the wild, and have developed a cult following of local ‘mushroom hunters’ who roam our local forests looking for this treat of nature. Woodsy and earthy, yet delicate and rich, they are lovely simply sautéed in butter or olive oil, or enjoyed in this week’s suggested asparagus and mushroom eggs Benedict recipe.

Fresh Herb Compound Butter

Crafted from sweet butter, shallots, fleur de sel and fresh garden herbs, this compound butter is delicious spread on a slice of toasted Gruyère cheese bread or mixed into creamy scrambled eggs.

Gruyère Cheese Bread

Made in nearby Snohomish by our favorite bakery, this freshly-baked loaf balances sweet, nutty Gruyère cheese with a light, crisp crust. Absolutely delicious toasted or re-warmed in the oven—just sprinkle with a few drops of water and bake at 350° for about 15 minutes.

Nathan Gray Syrah 2014

Crafted by Kerloo Cellars winemaker Ryan Crane from 100-percent Syrah grapes grown on the famed Den Hoed Vineyard, this fantastic wine boasts a deep-purple color, plus notes of ripe red fruit. The smooth, finessed finish helps it pair nicely with this week’s Morel mushrooms.

Sheep’s Milk Feta Cheese

Crumbly with a tart, salty taste, this traditional-style aged feta is crafted from 100% whole sheep’s milk.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. With the arrival of longer and warmer days, the “girls” are enjoying long afternoons in the sun, chasing bugs and eating tasty green weeds we pull from the garden.

Seasonal Fruit

Fresh lemons.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes Walla Walla salad onions, Russian Banana fingerling potatoes, red Swiss chard, spring broccoli rabe, Pink Beauty radishes and asparagus from Tonnemaker Farm.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Fresh spinach greens and mustard mix, plus Tom Thumb, baby red and Little Gem Romaine lettuces.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Enjoy a bounty of bright herbs this week: Italian parsley, Rosemary, thyme, green garlic, oregano, mint and chive blossoms, plus garlic and shallots.
