What’s In The Box? May 26 – June 1

Sunday Supper
In the tradition of our own Nonna Pat’s long-standing Sunday suppers, this week’s box includes fixings for a truly satisfying Italian-style spread: Appetizer provisions like freshly-baked focaccia and plump olives; fresh bucatini pasta topped with Nonna’s signature marinara sauce and Grana-style cheese; and finally, our signature lemon olive oil-polenta cake mix to whip up for dessert. Also included: Local duck eggs, fresh garden herbs and a lineup of produce favorites like Lacinato kale, Hakurei turnips and Meyer lemons—mangia!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Nonna Pat’s Marinara Sauce

Crafted in our farm kitchen with organically-grown local tomatoes (and lots of love), the key to this beloved family recipe is in its simplicity: juicy, ripe tomatoes, a handful of hand-torn basil leaves, fresh garlic, a swirl of first-press Italian olive oil and then sea salt and fresh ground pepper.

Fresh Bucatini Pasta

Hand-crafted in nearby Bellingham, this spaghetti-like semolina pasta has a hole running through the center—hence the name bucatini, which comes from the Italian buco, meaning “hole”, while bucato means “pierced”.

Focaccia Bread

This soft, chewy Italian-style loaf is baked just for us by our favorite local bakery. Kissed with fragrant fresh herbs, it is delicious served warm and dipped in olive oil.

Poggio Anima Samael Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

The Montepulciano grapes in this ruby-hued wine come from a single organically farmed vineyard in Chieti, Italy, that i located less than half a mile from the Adriatic Sea. With notes of smoky black plum, earth and brown sugar on the nose, along with hints of blackberry liqueur and mint, it has a lingering acidity and finishes strong with pronounced tannins.

Farm Fresh Eggs

As they spend more time outdoors in their run, our small flock of heritage breed laying hens are enjoying succulent popweed pulled from the gardens along with an extra helping of grain to supplement their diet, continuing to give us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.

Duck Eggs

With near-transparent egg whites and color-rich oversize yolks, these local duck eggs are a chef’s dream, lending flavorful appeal to a variety of dishes.

Grana-Style Cheese

Made in our farmstead creamery, this hard Grana-style cheese is crafted from part-skim cow’s milk to allow for longer aging of 24 months or more, and is turned and rubbed with olive oil during aging to create a smooth, golden rind.

Olives Misti

Marinated mixed olives.

Fresh Organic Greens

A beautiful mix of salad greens, plus Lacinato kale.

Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes yellow spring onions, Hakurei turnips and Meyer lemons.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Chives, spring garlic and thyme from the herb gardens at Bella Luna.

Lemon-Olive Oil Polenta Cake Mix

This light and moist cake is a family favorite and boasts a wonderful texture thanks to the inclusion of polenta. Try it for dessert, topped with your choice of fresh berries and a generous dollop of crème fraîche or whipped cream.
