What’s In The Box? November 12-18

Cozy Sunday Supper
In the tradition of our own Nonna Pat’s long-standing Sunday suppers, this week’s box includes fixings for a meal to share with your nearest and dearest: A hearty rigatoni pasta tossed with our Nonna Pat’s luscious tomato sauce, Italian chicken sausage, capers and olives, plus sun-dried tomato-kissed Pomodoro bread accompanied by a smooth Argentinian Malbec. Side dish-worthy produce including fall Sweet Dumpling and Delicata squash, golden beets and Italian puntarelle round out this robust Italian meal.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Lagana Foods Rigatoni Pasta

Lagana Foods pasta is hand-crafted in downtown Seattle using semolina flour and water and cut to shape with Old-World bronze dies to give the dough an intentionally rustic appeal. This week, try this tube-shaped pasta tossed with our Nonna Pat’s luscious marinara sauce and chicken Italian sausage, plus briny capers and olives—see recipes for details.

Nonna Pat’s Marinara Sauce

Crafted in our farm kitchen with organically-grown local tomatoes (and lots of love), the key to our beloved family recipe is in its simplicity: juicy, ripe tomatoes, a handful of hand-torn basil leaves, fresh garlic, a swirl of first-press Italian olive oil, then sea salt and fresh ground pepper.

Double D Meats Chicken Italian Sausage

Family owned and run since 1955, this Mountlake Terrace butchery only carries naturally raised meats, including this week’s chicken sausage. Spiced with fresh herbs and traditional Italian flavors, it adds savory flavor to pasta.

Capers & Olives

Plump, fruity capers and briny olives to incorporate into this week’s pasta.

Pomodoro Loaf

Flecked with flavorful sun-dried tomatoes and herbs and topped with flaky sea salt, this savory loaf is baked just for us at our local bakery in Snohomish.

Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Reserva 2011

This smooth and supple wine is crafted from the heralded Malbec grapes grown in the Valle de Uco within the Mendoza region of Argentina. Offering notes of paprika and dark chocolate, along with hints of dark plum, cherry and boysenberry, it is lovely sipped alone or served alongside this week’s pasta supper.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, blue and green.

Westward Blue Cheese

Similar to a gorgonzola, this creamy soft cheese boasts a gorgeous marbled center and flavorful bite, making it a wonderful complement for fall squash. See this week’s recipes for a wonderful savory recipe—roasted squash topped with blue cheese and toasted hazelnuts.

Fresh Orchard Apples

Cameo apples from Tonnemaker Family Orchard.

Seasonal Organic Fruits & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection includes Sweet Dumpling, Delicata or Red Kuri Kabocha winter squash, Chantenay carrots, red Cipollini onions, Jimmy Nardello peppers, bunched red beets, French breakfast radishes, rainbow cherry tomatoes, Ozette fingerling potatoes, leeks, puntarelle and Lacinato kale.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Butterhead lettuce, plus a beautiful sweet and spicy mesclun mix.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Organically-grown Italian flat-leaf parsley, thyme, shallots and garlic.
