What’s In The Box? November 3-9

A Taste of Bavaria
In keeping with the warm, soulful flavors of classic Oktoberfest, this week’s lineup takes a trip to Bavaria with such favorites as smoky bratwurst links, fresh pumpernickel bread and tangy sauerkraut. Complemented by an array of fall all-stars like Autumn Frost winter squash, red carrots and cabbage, Spitzenberg apples and baby potatoes to incorporate into comforting side dishes, this box also includes farm-fresh eggs, kiwi berries and a bevy of salad greens, plus Sauk Farm apple cider and a vibrant, crimson-red Cabernet Sauvignon—prost!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Skagit River Ranch Bratwurst

The pampered pigs raised on this farm in Sedro-Woolley roam outdoors in certified organic pastureland to root, dig, and cavort, thriving on a diet of flaxseed, corn and wheat. This week, enjoy the all-natural pork in the ranch’s perfectly-spiced bratwurst.

Britt’s Riesling Sauerkraut

Crafted from green cabbage, sweet onion, sea salt and yes, Riesling wine, this zippy sauerkraut from Langley, Washington’s Britt’s Fermented Foods is wonderful served with this week’s Bavarian fare. (Fun fact: The first sauerkraut was actually from China and used rice wine! Sauerkraut was introduced to Europe by the Huns when they came on horseback and became a staple in German cuisine when they combined salt and water with their cabbage.)

Pumpernickel Bread

Baked fresh just for us by a small bakery in nearby Snohomish, this slightly-sweet rye bread loaf is wonderful served alongside this week’s German-inspired fare.

Wakefield Promised Land Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

This vibrant, crimson red Cab from Southern Australia features aromas of red currant, plum and a touch of spice, as well as notes of black currant and subtle savory coffee and cedar flavors, plus a smooth and gentle finish on the palate.

Sauk Farm Honeycrisp Apple Cider

Crafted from cold-pressed Honeycrisp apples grown on Sauk Farm in Concrete, Washington, this refreshing cider is delicious served crisp and cold all on its own, or is mixed into your next fall cocktail.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. With the shorter days, the girls are up early to roam the outdoors. Bedtime is coming much earlier now, as we see them heading back into their house to roost as the sun is going down.

Seasonal Organic Greens

This week’s greens include Little Gem lettuce, mixed mini lettuces, red cabbage and Treviso radicchio.

Fresh Kiwi Berries

A cousin of the well-known kiwi, these smooth, grape-sized Anna Hardy kiwi berries boast a delightfully sweet flavor!

Seasonal Organic Fruit & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes red beets, Peter Wilcox potatoes, Autumn Frost winter squash, red carrots, leeks, fennel and yellow onions, plus Spitzenberg apples.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Thyme, parsley, sage, garlic and rosemary from the walled garden at Bella Luna Farms.

Dried Mini Bouquets

A sweet sampling of everlasting, dried seasonal blooms.
