What’s In The Box? October 1-7

Season to Season
With the swing from cloudy and drippy to amazingly-sunny and crisp, the weather has us—and the gardens—towing the line between summer and fall. Luckily, that also means that we are enjoying produce from both seasons as summery favorites like tomatoes, corn, late season blueberries and unique purple Islander peppers continue to delight alongside new offerings like Delicata squash and beautiful Shipova pears. Also included: Gruyère cheese bread, eggs and one of two of our favorite red wines to toast to whatever season is at hand today.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box:

Islander Purple Bell Pepper

Similar in taste to a green Bell with a sweet and mild flavor, the Islander pepper is not only a beautiful violet hue straight off the plant, but it then continues to ripen into deep, dark red as well. That means when it arrives to you, it can be fully purple or streaked with yellow or orange—nature’s very own tie-dye effect!

Gruyère Cheese Bread

Made in nearby Snohomish by our favorite bakery, this freshly-baked loaf balances sweet, nutty Gruyère cheese with a light, crisp crust. Absolutely delicious toasted or re-warmed in the oven—just sprinkle with a few drops of water and bake at 350° for about 15 minutes.

Shannon Ridge Wrangler Red 2017

This bright California wine is a blend of Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah,
Merlot, Mourvédre and Cabernet Franc, creating a multi-layered wine of great depth and silky smooth finish.

Contini Cannonau Tonaghe

This deep ruby-red Sicilian wine features. pure, precise aromas of red cherry and dark berries show a delicate smoky quality and a violet topnote. Sweet and straightforward on the palate, offering ripe blackberry and red cherry flavors.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Busy scratching through the straw mulch in their spacious outdoor run looking for tasty bugs and worms, our heritage breed laying hens supply us with fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.

Housemade Apple Butter

A farmhouse favorite crafted from fresh-picked orchard apples, slow-cooked in a cider reduction and seasoned with brown sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Peppery arugula greens and Cegolaine mini butter crunch lettuce.

Seasonal Fruit

Late season blueberries, Ginger Gold apples, Venus grapes and Shipova pears, a round yellow-orange cross between the European and Whitebeam varieties.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes corn, mixed summer squash, fennel, sweet Italian peppers, Watermelon radish, broccolini, Delicata squash, heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and orange carrots.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Basil, parsley and garlic from the walled garden and hoophouse at Bella Luna Farms.
