What’s In The Box? October 1-7

Mediterranean Favorites
The light and bright flavors of Greece lend themselves beautifully to this week’s box as luscious produce like lemons, frying peppers, zucchini and cucumbers continue to ripen during this sunny early fall. Take advantage of this bounty with a menu starring peppery Greek sausage, our signature chicken stock to incorporate into a traditional Avgolemono soup and savory halloumi cheese fit for frying. A light and crisp Greek wine and a sun-dried tomato-kissed Pomodoro loaf complete this feast of Mediterranean delights.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Double D Meats Greek Sausage

This pig has kick! Spiced with fresh-cracked pepper, garlic and fresh herbs, this flavorful sausage is made from grain-fed pork at Double D Meats, a family-owned and -run butchery located in Mountlake Terrace.

Pomodoro Loaf

Flecked with flavorful sun-dried tomatoes and herbs, plus hints of sea salt, this savory loaf is baked just for us at a small bakery in Snohomish.

Farm & Larder Chicken Stock

Made from roasted Bella Luna chickens, our signature stock is simmered slowly for hours with carrots, onions and celery and seasoned with a dash of sea salt. This immensely flavorful broth adds a beautiful richness to the Avgolemono lemon soup found in this week’s recipes.

Skouras Zoe White 2014

Lively and aromatic with a crisp acidity, the Skouras Zoe is crafted with 60-percent Roditis and 40-percent Moscofilero grapes which are grown at the winery’s heralded vineyard located in Peloponnese region of Greece near the village of Argos. With a complex nose and beautiful extended finish, this wine is wonderful alongside a starter of fried halloumi cheese.

Sheep’s Milk Halloumi Cheese

Made to traditional standards from whole sheep’s milk at Circle of Trees Farm, this salty, unripened brined cheese is perfect for frying or grilling, maintaining its robust texture and deep savory flavor against heat—see this week’s recipes for serving ideas.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, blue and green. With shorter days that signal the coming of fall, the girls are up with the sun to roam the outdoors where they still enjoy the warm afternoons. Bedtime is coming much earlier now, as we see them heading into their house to roost as the sun is going down.

Ripe Fruit

Crisp, bright red Liberty apples and juicy lemons.

Seasonal Organic Fruits & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes Corne di Toro sweet peppers, red onions, purple eggplant, red radishes, golden beets, Marketmore cucumbers, zucchini, red slicing tomatoes, Romanesco cauliflower and baby Yukon Gold potatoes, plus Gatherer’s Gold peppers. (See this week’s recipes for tips on frying these gorgeous peppers!)

Seasonal Organic Greens

A beautiful selection of Treviso radicchio, escarole and spicy salad mix.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Organically-grown Italian parsley, mint, rosemary, oregano, garlic and shallots.
