What’s In The Box? September 19-25

Color, Color Everywhere
From the first turning leaves to the produce in the garden, this week is all about color—and what a wealth of vibrant options, from purple Italian eggplant and sweet red peppers to cranberry shelling beans and rainbow Swiss chard. Thus, this box embraces the crisp, soulful flavors of early fall as they converge with late summer favorites like heirloom tomatoes, prune plums and fragrant melon. Also on board to help you craft a satisfying supper: Our signature crème fraîche and Pomodoro bread, plus a ruby-spiced apple shrub to craft a well-deserved cocktail. Enjoy!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Ruby Spiced Apple Shrub

A 2018 Good Food Awards Finalist, this wonderful cocktail mixer from Orcas Island-based Girl Meets Girl is crafted from tart Everest crabapples, star anise, cinnamon and black pepper—try it splashed cold with Prosecco for a brunchtime treat or served warm with brandy for a delightful apple toddy to end the day!

Pomodoro Loaf

Flecked with flavorful sun-dried tomatoes and herbs, plus a hint of sea salt, this savory loaf is baked just for us by our favorite bakery in Snohomish.

Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Reserva 2011

This smooth and supple wine is crafted from the heralded Malbec grapes grown in the Valle de Uco within the Mendoza region of Argentina. Offering notes of paprika and dark chocolate, along with hints of dark plum, cherry and boysenberry, it is lovely sipped alone or served alongside this week’s recommended recipe for roasted ratatouille toasts.

Crème Fraîche

Crafted in our farmstead creamery from pasteurized organic sweet cream, our rich and silky crème fraîche adds the perfect finishing touch to just about anything—think scrambled eggs, creamy salad dressings or simply dolloped over a warm fruit crisp.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. The “girls” are enjoying the pleasant afternoons and crisp evenings, chasing bugs and eating tasty green weeds we pull from the garden.

Seasonal Fruit

Apriums, Santa Claus melons from Tonnemaker Orchard and Italian prune plums.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Rainbow Swiss chard.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables & Fruit

This week’s produce selection also includes heirloom tomatoes, fennel, Italian eggplant, celery, Chioggia beets, sweet Italian red peppers, Walla Walla sweet onions, leeks and cranberry shelling beans.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Parsley, sage, rosemary and garlic from the walled garden and greenhouse at Bella Luna.
