What’s In The Box? September 26-October 2

Season to Season
Swinging from cloudy and drippy to sunny and crisp, the weather has us—and the gardens—towing the line between summer and fall. Luckily, that mercurial forecast also means that we are enjoying produce from both seasons as summery favorites like heirloom tomatoes, zucchini and peppers continue to delight alongside local Chanterelle mushrooms and fresh fettuccine to toss together for a cozy fall supper. Also included: Pain au Levain bread, Asian pears from the orchard and an Italian red wine so you can toast to whatever season is at hand today.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Chanterelle Mushrooms

With a firm texture and light, delicate flavor, locally foraged Chanterelle mushrooms shine in a variety of dishes, lending earthy appeal to the likes of risotto and soup. This week, we heartily recommend trying these golden gems sautéed in butter and added to a dish of fresh fettuccine.

Fresh Fettuccine

These gorgeous wide pasta noodles are hand-crafted from wholesome, quality ingredients by Bellingham Pasta Company.

Pain au Levain Bread

This slightly-nutty, slightly-sweet sourdough loaf embodies country-style French baking with a chewy crust and light, airy interior. Baked just for us at a small bakery in Snohomish, this traditional Pain au Levain is crafted using the bakery’s own sourdough starter.

La Fiera Montepulciano A’bruzzo

Lovely with casual fare such as this week’s recommended pasta, this Italian red wine is medium-to-full bodied with notes of violet and crushed red fruit on the nose. Ruby-red in color, it also features soft tannins and a very pleasant finish.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. The “girls” are enjoying the pleasant afternoons and crisp evenings, chasing bugs and eating tasty green weeds we pull from the garden.

Farm & Larder Chicken Stock

Made from roasted Bella Luna chickens, our signature stock is simmered slowly for hours with carrots, onions and celery and seasoned with a dash of sea salt. This immensely flavorful broth will add a beautiful richness to sautéed Chanterelle mushrooms or braised baby artichokes this week.

Seasonal Fruit

Fresh-picked Asian pears.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Peppery arugula greens.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection includes chicory, zucchini, Basque peppers, fennel, heirloom tomatoes, Walla Walla sweet onions and romanesco. Also included: Delicate baby artichokes perfect for braising in our signature chicken stock and a splash of wine—see recipes for details!

Fresh Garden Herbs

Parsley, garlic and thyme from the walled garden and greenhouse at Bella Luna.

Dried Lavender

Bundled in a linen sachet, these fragrant dried lavender buds are sure to be a sweet reminder of summer in the months to come!
