What’s In The Box? September 3-9

Summery September
Though the calendar may say September, the recent sunny weather has the gardens thinking it’s still high summer as they continue to produce favorites for this week’s box like heirloom tomatoes, Jimmy Nardello peppers, English cucumbers and ripe melons, as well as give us an autumn preview with the first of the local Chanterelle mushrooms. Also included: Smoky bacon and our buttery housemade dough to craft a stunning crostata—so pop that in the oven, uncork a bottle of California red wine and toast to the best of both summer and fall.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box:

Crostata Dough

Crafted from all-purpose flour and organic butter, this housemade pastry dough bakes up light and crisp, with a smooth buttery taste that pairs well with savory ingredients like this week’s smoky bacon, Walla Walla sweet onions and Chanterelle mushrooms.

Skagit River Ranch Bacon

The perfect compliment to summery sweet onions in this week’s crostata, this smoky, locally-sourced bacon is also nitrate-free. The pampered pigs raised on the Skagit River Ranch in Sedro Woolley roam outdoors in certified-organic pastures to root, dig, and cavort as only happy pigs can, thriving on a diet of flax seed, corn and wheat.

Pomodoro Loaf

Flecked with flavorful sun-dried tomatoes and herbs, this savory loaf is baked just for us at a small bakery in Snohomish.

Shannon Ridge Wrangler Red 2017

This bright California wine is a blend of Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Mourvédre and Cabernet Franc, creating a multi-layered wine of great depth and silky smooth finish.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Busy scratching through the straw mulch in their spacious outdoor run looking for tasty bugs and worms, our heritage breed laying hens supply us with fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.

Ripe Summer Fruit

Blueberries, Duchess pears and ripe local melons.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Red Oak leaf lettuce and edible flowers to add color and spice to your salads.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes Tropea onions, red beets, Jimmy Nardello peppers, heirloom tomatoes, Sungold cherry tomatoes, corn, English cucumbers, Walla Walla sweet onions and mixed summer squash.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Italian parsley, basil, thyme, rosemary and garlic from the walled garden at Bella Luna Farms.

Dick Taylor Chocolate S’mores Kit

Finish off your next meal with a sweet, salty, buttery, chocolatey treat! This s’mores kit from Northern California chocolatier Dick Taylor elevates the campfire staple with the perfect trio of the brand’s signature 72-percent Belize dark chocolate, plus Malvi vanilla marshmallows and flakey Effie’s Oatcakes.
