What’s In The Box? September 5-11

SEPTEMBER 5-11

Summery September
Though the calendar may say September, the recent sunny weather has the gardens thinking it’s still high summer as they continue to produce favorites for this week’s box like heirloom tomatoes, colorful Corno di Toro frying peppers and zucchini, as well as spicy microgreens, string beans and purple Italian garlic. Also included: Fresh semolina pappardelle pasta and all the ingredients for a peach cobbler topped with whipped crème fraîche—so pop that in the oven, uncork a bottle of dry Spanish white wine and toast to lingering summer.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Fresh Semolina Pappardelle Pasta

This lovely, fresh handmade pasta is made by our favorite local pasta maker in Bellingham. Perhaps enjoyed with freshly-sliced heirloom tomatoes and fragrant basil, or tossed with sautéed purple garlic and a medley of colorful frying peppers, these broad, flat noodles should rightly earn their name, which is derived from the Italian verb for ‘to gobble up’.

Pain au Levain Bread

This slightly-nutty, slightly-sweet sourdough loaf embodies country-style French baking with a chewy crust and light, airy interior. Baked just for us at a small bakery in Snohomish, this traditional Pain au Levain is crafted using the bakery’s own sourdough starter.

Huguet Can Feixes Blanc Seleccio 2017

This young, dry white wine is made from a careful selection of the grape varietals grown in Can Feixes, Spain, all carefully nurtured to express the primary fruit and floral characters typical of these grapes. The dedication of the Huguet family to the vines has made this wine a true classic that ranks amongst the great white wines of the Penedès.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. The “girls” are enjoying the pleasantly sunny afternoons, chasing bugs and eating tasty green weeds we pull from the garden.

Crème Fraîche

Crafted in our farmstead creamery from pasteurized organic sweet cream, our rich and silky crème fraîche adds the perfect finishing touch to a warm peach cobbler.

F&L Cobbler Crust Mix

Our signature cobbler crust mix contains organic flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and butter; when combined with milk, the resulting mixture can be used for a light and fluffy cobbler topping or cut into rounds for shortcakes. Pair with this week’s donut peaches for a simply-sweet dessert.

Ripe Summer Fruit

Apriums and beautiful donut peaches from Tonnemaker Family Orchard in Royal City.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Spicy microgreens and Treviso radicchio.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables & Fruit

This week’s produce selection also includes Corno di Toro frying peppers, yellow and green zucchini, rainbow cherry tomatoes, purple string beans, Carosello cucumber, heirloom tomatoes and golden beets.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Basil, parsley and purple Italian garlic from the walled garden and greenhouse at Bella Luna.
