What’s In The Box? March 17-23

St. Patrick’s Day Feast
Just in time for St. Paddy’s Day and the arrival of spring on Sunday, this week’s box bursts to life with beautiful spring ‘greenery’—from green cabbage and leeks to Red Russian kale and kale rapini, plus garden-fresh herbs and a blooming shamrock plant to enliven your home. Complementing this bounty are all the ingredients for an Emerald Isle-inspired feast: hearty Irish sausages, imported cheddar cheese and soda bread kissed with raisins and caraway seed.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Double D Meats Irish Sausage

Also affectionately known as ‘bangers’, traditional Irish sausages are made with ground pork, eggs, bread crumbs and spices, giving them a robust flavor and bite. This week’s version from Mountlake Terrace’s Double D Meats is also crafted from the butchery’s famous all-natural pork—try these hearty links in a Dublin coddle, a slow-cooked, country-style favorite using sausage, onions and potatoes; see recipes for details.

Irish Soda Bread

Baked in nearby Snohomish by our favorite bakery, this beloved, traditional-style quick bread is freshened up by the addition of plump, juicy raisins and caraway seed.

Kevin White Winery Yakima Valley Red

Crafted by Microsoft exec Kevin White, this delightful red blend—a combination of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre—offers appealing aromas of smoke, herbs and fresh fruit. The palate is silky in feel with a lovely, lingering finish.

Imported Irish Cheddar Cheese

This rindless, pasteurized cow’s milk cheese is imported from Ireland and boasts a sweet, fruity flavor that is balanced by the moderately sharp bite. Wonderful for snacking (or incorporated into a grilled cheese sandwich!), it is also a lovely accompaniment to creamy, starchy potatoes—see recipes for ideas.

Farm Fresh Eggs

As they spend their time dodging raindrops on wet spring days, our heritage breed laying hens enjoy the tasty green popweed we pull from the garden, in turn supplying us with eggs in shades of brown, blue and green with bright yellow yolks.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection includes leeks, Gilfeather turnips, Acorn squash, green cabbage, Nantes carrots, yellow onions, baby red potatoes and golden beets.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Kale rapini and Red Russian kale.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Curly parsley, winter savory, garlic, shallots and thyme from the Walled Garden at Bella Luna.

Shamrock Plant

A little something flowery and green for your window sill or dining table!
