What’s In The Box? October 27 – November 2

Oktoberfest
In keeping with the warm, soulful flavors of classic Oktoberfest, this week’s lineup stars such favorites as tender pork shoulder braised in sauerkraut, tangy mustard and chewy, wholesome pumpernickel bread. Complemented by an array of fresh fall produce like crisp carrots, Delicata squash and Yukon Gold potatoes to incorporate into comforting side dishes, this box also includes two locally-made chocolate bars to finish off your supper on a sweet note.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Sauerkraut-Braised Pork Shoulder

This tender, flavorful pork is slow-simmered for hours in the farmhouse kitchen with tangy sauerkraut, onions, chicken stock and a splash of white wine. A wonderful centerpiece for your feast of Bavarian favorites—just serve it alongside German-style green cabbage, a side of mustard and even more sauerkraut. (Chicken bratwursts will be substituted for subscribers who have requested no pork products.)

Mustard

Wonderful with this week’s pork shoulder, this signature mustard is bold and slightly spicy, made from ground mustard seeds, parsley, and champagne vinegar.

Sauerkraut

Made from finely-shredded cabbage fermented with sea salt, this traditional German condiment packs a wonderful, tangy kick.

Pumpernickel Rye Bread

Baked by our favorite local bakery in Snohomish, this slightly-sweet rye bread loaf is wonderful toasted and served alongside this week’s bevy of Bavarian favorites, and enjoyed in a hearty sandwich the next day, too, topped with leftover pork shoulder, mustard and slow-cooked green cabbage.

Mahrs Bräu Bamberg Mastodon Lager

This well-balanced lager is crafted by the family-run Mahrs Bräu brewery in Bamburg, Germany and features caramel notes that are subtly balanced by a discerning level of hops. Enjoy!

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown and green. With shorter days of fall, the girls are up with the sun to roam the outdoors; bedtime is coming much earlier now, as we see them heading into their house to roost as the sun is going down.

Seattle Chocolates Dead Sea Salt & Choc-o-Lantern Milk Chocolate Bars

One packed with buttery toffee and sea salt, the other kissed with pumpkin spice, these rich, milk chocolate treats from local company Seattle Chocolates are sure to sweeten up Halloween night.

Fresh Orchard Fruit

Crisp fall apples from the orchard trees at Bella Luna.

Seasonal Organic Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes Yukon Gold potatoes, carrots, yellow onions and Delicata squash.

Seasonal Organic Greens

Green cabbage and red Swiss chard.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Parsley, thyme, garlic and shallots.
