What’s In The Box? October 15-21

Oktoberfest
In keeping with the warm flavors of Oktoberfest, this week’s lineup stars such favorites as hearty German sausages, a tangy curry mustard and chewy, wholesome rye bread. Complemented by an array of fresh fall produce like crisp carrots, cauliflower and Butterball potatoes to incorporate into comforting side dishes, this satisfying supper also includes crisp local ale and a lovely pear-cranberry galette for dessert.

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

German Bratwurst

Robust with spices and hearty all-natural pork, these traditional-style German sausages from Mountlake Terrace’s Double D Meats pair beautifully with hearty fall produce like cauliflower, carrots and potatoes—see this week’s recipes for instructions to an array of comforting sides to serve alongside.

Mustard and Co. Honey Curry Mustard

Crafted on a weekly basis in small batches at this local company’s South Park shop, this slightly-sweet mustard is packed with fresh-ground and raw organic mustard seed, organic extra-virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, raw Pacific Northwest honey, organic curry blend and Jacobsen Salt Co. sea salt.

Rye Bread

This dense, flavorful loaf is baked just for us at a small bakery in Snohomish with medium-grain rye flour and light caraway seed.

Pike Brewing Co. Pike Locale Skagit Valley Alba

Made by Pike Brewing Company, this light and citrusy ale is the first in a new series of craft beers made from 100-percent Washington-grown ingredients. Subtly flavored with Yakima Valley hops and Skagit Valley-grown barley, it boasts a clean, earthy taste and nutty malt finish. Enjoy a frosty glass with this week’s sausage.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our small flock of heritage breed laying hens gives us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, blue and green. With shorter days that signal the coming of fall, the girls are up with the sun to roam the outdoors where they still enjoy the warm afternoons. Bedtime is coming much earlier now, as we see them heading into their house to roost as the sun is going down.

Housemade Chicken Stock

Made from roasted Bella Luna chickens, this flavorful stock is simmered slowly for hours with carrots, onions and celery and seasoned with garden herbs and a dash of sea salt.

Galette Dough

Crafted from organic ingredients including all-purpose flour, sugar and organic butter, this housemade pastry dough adapted from a beloved Alice Waters recipe bakes up light and crisp, with a smooth buttery taste that pairs well with orchard pears and tart cranberries—see this week’s recipes for details.

Ripe Fruit

Olympic Asian pears, fresh cranberries and lemons.

Seasonal Organic Fruits & Vegetables

This week’s produce selection also includes a selection of salad tomatoes including Stupice and Jaune Flamme varieties, plus sweet red cherry tomatoes, red Cipollini onions, sprouting broccoli, white cauliflower, orange carrots, heirloom sweet Gypsy and Gatherer’s Gold frying peppers, Sweet Dumpling winter squash, German Butterball potatoes and Local Roots Farm’s green beans.

Seasonal Organic Greens

A beautiful selection of Treviso radicchio and spicy salad greens.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Organically-grown Italian flat-leaf parsley, thyme, sage, garlic and shallots.
