What’s In The Box? March 7-13

Flavors of Bavaria
In keeping with the warm, soulful flavors of classic German fare, this week’s lineup takes a trip to Bavaria with such favorites as smoky bratwurst links, fresh pumpernickel bread and tangy sauerkraut. Complemented by an array of seasonal all-stars like purple top turnips, Meyer lemons, crisp apples, baby red beets and fingerling potatoes to incorporate into comforting side dishes, this box also includes farm-fresh eggs, freshly-baked Linzer cookies, a rye stout vinegar, and a medley of earthy mushrooms—prost!

Here’s what you’ll find in your box this week:

Skagit River Ranch Bratwurst

The pampered pigs raised on this farm in Sedro-Woolley roam outdoors in certified organic pastureland to root, dig, and cavort, thriving on a diet of flaxseed, corn and wheat. This week, enjoy the all-natural pork in the ranch’s perfectly-spiced bratwurst.

Britt’s Riesling Sauerkraut

Crafted from green cabbage, sweet onion, sea salt and yes, Riesling wine, this zippy sauerkraut from Langley, Washington’s Britt’s Fermented Foods is wonderful served with this week’s Bavarian fare. (Fun fact: The first sauerkraut was actually from China and used rice wine! Sauerkraut was introduced to Europe by the Huns when they came on horseback and became a staple in German cuisine when they combined salt and water with their cabbage.)

Pumpernickel Bread

Baked fresh just for us by a small bakery in nearby Snohomish, this slightly-sweet rye bread loaf is wonderful served alongside this week’s German-inspired fare.

Milbrandt Vineyards 2022 Rosé

The Syrah dominant Rosé from this Washington winery is dry, full-bodied and lush, with gorgeous red berry fruits like raspberry and strawberry. It shows extraordinary bright fruit and floral notes on the nose. A crisp profile, hints of grapefruit pith, and layered minerality make this vintage everything you could want in a dry Rosé.

Farm Fresh Eggs

As they spend more time snug in their coop, our heritage breed laying hens are enjoying an extra helping of grain to supplement their diet, and continue to give us fresh eggs in beautiful shades of brown, beige and cream.

Freshly-Baked Raspberry Linzer Cookies

These delicate confections are a delightful marriage of buttery richness and fruity sweetness, consisting of two almond-flavored butter cookies sandwiched together with a layer of vibrant raspberry jam and then dusted with a sweet sprinkling of powdered sugar.

Häxan Ferments Rye Stout Vinegar

Seattle-based Häxan Ferments’ take on a traditional favorite, malt vinegar: A beer vinegar made with a rich and nutty classic American stout!

Seasonal Organic Greens

Beautiful green Bibb lettuce, Savoy cabbage and Chioggia radicchio.

Seasonal Fruit

Sweet-tart Meyer lemons and orchard apples.

Mushroom Medley

A beautiful medley of locally-grown wild and cultivated mushrooms.

Seasonal Organic Produce

This week’s produce selection also includes Austrian Crescent and French fingerling potatoes, parsnips, baby red beets, leeks, onions, and purple top turnips.

Fresh Garden Herbs

Fresh thyme and garlic from the walled garden and hoophouse at Bella Luna Farms.

Locally Cultivated Caraway Seed

Caraway seeds, with their warm, earthy flavor and subtle hint of anise, add depth and aromatic complexity to a variety of dishes, from savory breads to hearty stews and beyond.
